I recommended him to michellawyers.com, but heads up to everyone else, they've managed to gum up the gears.
Did your friend reach out to LEPS? I took a vacation and didn't schedule my psych eval until I got back into country (roughly ~2 months after sent initial reg. link from LEPS), and saw no availability for weeks. Reached out to LEPS and they send me a new link with availability within the week. Could be an "expired" link issue? But wouldn't be surprised if they're backlogged by people trying to reg from other counties.

Interestingly enough, right after I completed my psych eval, I received this email from my SFPD handler (wonder if they were investigating something or laying the hammer down on LEPS):

The purpose of this email is to confirm that you have scheduled your Psychological Exam with LEPS or if you chose to stop the CCW application process.

If you are continuing with the application process, I have a few questions that would assist me in completing the permitting process. I respectfully request that you supply me with the following information:
    • Date Psychological Exam (in person interview or Zoom interview) was completed.
    • Name of doctor or clinician that completed the exam.
    • Were you asked to supply more information or documentation to LEPS? This is a yes or no question, I am not interested in the specifics of the request.
    • If the answer to Question 3 is YES, was the information provided to LEPS?

Took the first part of LEPS today, I’m a pretty fast reader and it took me about 2hrs 45mins. I wasn’t aware there was going to be a second appointment day for a one on one, assumed it was all in the same day. Looks like another day off work is in order 2 weeks from now.

I took a similar amount of time on the testing portion, maybe slightly less. The 4hrs they ask for is probably too generous.

The verbal interview portion, was even shorter: less than 20 minutes for me.

Yes, he's reached out to LEPS and apparently they were pretty nasty with him. They Tell him there's nothing wrong with the link, yet there are no appointments available.... For YEARS I told him to request a new link anyway, but they said it's just high demand. Well sorry, their inability to keep up with demand is denying him a constitutional right.

I will say, the shrink I interviewed with seemed like he absolutely hated his job. He so did not want to be there.

Interesting; back in June when I reached out, LEPs was extremely helpful and got me a new link. I guess the high demand changed their morale..

And completely agree; I've never been to a shrink, but the gentlemen who interviewed me sounded like he did not want to do the interview. That and he was about 10 minutes late to the scheduled appointment, which I did not appreciate...

Just finished my CCW training this weekend with Gun Kraft.

For those still in the process/shopping around for training; I highly recommend Robin (instructor; also LE) at Gun Kraft. Class was extremely informative and goes beyond your typical "Gun Handling 101" course. Robin spares no expense with the demonstration materials and curriculum behind the course. I loved how he had different holsters and airsoft guns for each attendee to practice appendix carry as well as OWB carry. His flow and delivery made everyone comfortable, regardless if you are a novice or an expert.

Did I already mention I highly recommend Gun Kraft for training?

Hell froze over. After living in SF for decades and thinking I would never have a permit, I have a permit.

                  I went the SFPD route.

I started the process in April 2023. I think SFPD was staffing up the CCW unit right as I was starting my application.

To respect the officers' privacy I am not going to use names.

When I first called, officer J told me it would take several weeks to get an appointment to drop off the application.
Apparently SFPD staffed up. I got a call back from an officer who told me I could drop the application off the next day. Note, the CCW blocks caller ID. I generally don't answer calls with blocked IDs but this time I did.

                  - 04/08 initial inquiry
                  - 04/11 call back
                  - 04/12 application drop off
                  - 05/09 interview with an officer to go over my application.
                  - 05/10 approved for Livescan
                  - 05/16 did livescan
                  - 06/09 approved for LEPS
                  - 06/20 did written LEPS psych test
                  - 06/22 did zoom call with LEPS psych
                  - 07/27 approval from SFPD to do training/qual
                  - 07/28 did classroom training through Saber Tactics
                  - 08/26 in person qualification at Los Altos range through Saber Tactics
                  - 08/29 submitted qualification cert to SFPD
                  - 09/11 got a call that my permit was signed by the Chief
                  - 09/12 picked up my permit

All the SFPD officers I dealt with were polite and helpful.

The LEPS psych seemed a bit like they wanted to be somewhere else. Note to self.... avoid humor with the psychs.

I would recommend Saber Tactics. The course material and the qualification class were both good.

The SFPD is issuing a 4x6 laminated paper permit. A credit card type permit would be a bit more convenient but I can find better things to complain about.

Picked up my physical permit today.

                    Updated timeline:

                    - Dropped off Application w/ Ofc. Johnson: 8/4/22

                    - Livescan results completed: 4/7/23
                    - SFPD email to proceed to Psych exam with LEPS (Law Enforcement Psychological Services, Inc.): 4/14/23
                    - LEPS update on scheduling:4/17/23
                    - Pysch Exam & Live Interview: 7/5/23 & 7/14/23
                    - Approved for training: 7/27/23
                    - Training & Weapons Qual: 9/2 - 9/3/23
                    - Training & Qual info sent to SFPD: 9/4/23
                    - SFPD call to confirm receipt of training & qual: 9/5/23
                    - Visit to SFPD headquarters for Permit Pickup: 9/23/23

After two phone calls from SFPD after qual info submitted, I emailed them inquiring the status. Got the call this AM that my permit was ready for pickup.

Like the previous post, all SFPD officers I've interacted with (phone & in-person) were genuinely professional and helpful. Never did I get any flak from anyone at SFPD.

Also like the previous post - I got the 4x6 laminated paper permit. The officer informed me that SFPD is waiting on the CA DOJ to approve their drivers license-sized card, which will probably be another 90 days. We (current SFPD CCW holders) will probably see it issued during renewal time in 2 years.

To my surprise, there was no fees outside of the psych exam and firearms training course. I was expecting a list of fees (at least for application/live scan) upon pick up, but just a signature, roll physical prints, and a debrief before I was on my way with permit in hand.

Anyboy else stuck following the Pysch and Live Interview?
I completed both on June 7th and 9th and haven't heard back from SFPD if I've qualified for training. Its been almost 4 months and wondering if my process got lost in the queue somewhere or if this is what others are experiencing.

I have reached out SFPD a couple times via email but no response.
Also reached out to LEPS and they said they don't give updates to clients only agencies.

Yes, but not 3-4 months long. Most people who reported timelines in this thread completed this step in less than 2 months.

I suggest calling instead writing. Both the SFPD and LEPS until you get clarity.

I am half-shocked how low the total number of applicants were, but then again some might be going through SFSO.

At least SFPD is making some progress by issuing some permits... I've been spreading the word; the more the merrier!

Update, finished training on 10/15 and emailed SFPD with the proof of training.

Got a reply from SFPD confirming they received it and letting me know it can be up to three weeks for chief to sign it.

Funny little tidbit, I attended a meeting last night and spoke to the Chief and was debating about dropping a hint about CCW applications but figured it was not the right place (Meeting was about security for religious institutions and schools in the city)
