Wanted to say thanks to all you CalGunners for the helpful info in this thread. I am new to the gun world and want to be sure I take all the necessary steps to be as informed and trained as possible. Went back to page 45 and spent the last week going through each post. I feel pretty well versed in all the requirements and expectations for obtaining my first CCW permit. Cheers!

Thanks 9Cal - I will definitely reach out to this group once I get to that step. May have to visit Artemis and give their pre-ccw workshop a try too.Comment

I recently moved to OC and I have started to photograph as a hobby. I carry around over $6k in photography equipment sometimes at nighttime and in areas were the time for law enforcement to reach me would be quite a while. There is also sometimes no cellphone coverage. Do you guys think I could get a CCW based on a hobby and not my actual profession?Comment

Welcome to the community, I believe we all want to help people new to the world of gun possession and self defense. If you are truly ‘new’ to guns, I would encourage you to spend plenty of time at a range with someone knowledgeable about proper gun safety rules, proper handling of a firearm, how to disassemble and clean it, and how to shoot it with reasonable accuracy. Whether that person is a knowledgeable relative, or you spend some money on a personal trainer ... whichever is available to you.Wanted to say thanks to all you CalGunners for the helpful info in this thread. As an every day carry person, its a big responsibility to be safe for yourself and those around you, and to be capable of using your firearm competently and responsibly for self defense if that terrible need ever arises. That takes training and practice. Lots of it. I was fortunate to grow up on a farm where firearms were always around, a constantly used ‘tool’ on the farm, and everyone in the family had gun safety drilled into them at a young age.
I’ve been through the CCW qualification process four times now, and in every CCW training class I’ve been to there is at least one or two persons there trying to qualify for their CCW that clearly have never handled a gun who struggle with some of the basics ... e.g., sweeping their muzzle dangerously, unable to get a magazine in or out of the gun properly (again without proper muzzle control), unable to clear a jam, unable to safe their gun without help, not following the RSO’s instructions, etc., ... and simply hitting the target consistently. Some get sent home to try another day, some get a lot of attention and help from the RSO. Training is a good thing, and even people that are already very familiar with firearms gain capabilities and confidence from good training. The CCW class isn’t where you should learn or be exposed to these things for the first time. You should come to the CCW class prepared, and confident/competent with your firearm. Wishing you joy in this new hobby and firearms as a means of self defense.Last edited by dawgcasa; 06-09-2020, 5:36 PM.Comment

My permit expires on June 18, 2020. I submitted in what I thought of as plenty of time.
3/26/20 – Submitted my Renewal application MINUS the training certificate.
4/2/2020 – Contacted 2 local trainers. They were not holding classes. Another trainer would hold the classroom portion but did not know of an open range for qualification.
4/3/2020 – Submitted additional document to permit application asking OCSD if permit would be extended if training was not available due to COVID.
4/9/20 – OCSD sent email response that NO extensions would be granted, that there were some trainers available during COVID.
4/10/20 – Reached out to CalGuns asking for trainers that were open for business. Received a couple of responses and signed up for training.
4/20/20 – Completed training.
4/21/20 – Submitted training certificate.
4/22/20 – OCSD sent email confirming that my application file had been submitted for final review.
5/21/2020 – Sent email to OCSD requesting status of permit.
5/21/20 – OCSD responded via email re-stating that my permit was in final review.
6/9/2020 – Sent email to OCSD asking for status, reminding them that my permit was expiring in about a week.
6/9/20 – OCSD sent email re-stating that my application was in final review.
6/9/20 – Received phone message that my application was approved and to expect a phone call in the next couple of days for payment.
6/10/2020 – Received phone call requesting payment information and that the permit should arrive within 3-4 business days.
6/13/20 – Received new permit via USPS.______________________________________

You may carry every gun that is on your permit at the same time. I regularly carry my EDC and a back up. Both guns are on my permit."Life Is Hard. It's Harder When You're Stupid"-John Wayne!
