Well, your instructor misinformed your entire class. Read the post just above where your first post was quoted to see the link to the LASD website where the official policy on modification is stated in writing.

Your instructor gave out bad information. I know personnel from LASD as well as other law enforcement agencies who investigate shootings. It's rare that a gun will be sent in to look for modifications except under rare circumstances. A justifiable shooting would not be one of those. As others have already stated, LASD's policy, directly from their CCW page shows that modifications are allowed as long as they are not illegal.

I will share my LEO knowledge to clear the confusion here.
First, I taught firearms and tactics for 18 years and also worked in the detective bureau for 10 years. So I have my share of handling OIS and civilian-involved shootings.

When an officer gets into a shooting, his or her weapon will be sent to be inspected for any unauthorized modifications. As far as the department policy, the department does not authorize aftermarket trigger mods, comps, or physical mods on the weapons. Any changes such as sights or replacement of broken parts have to be done by armory personnel and have to be documented.

For example, good old days, we used had a trigger job for our 92FS or SW 9mm handguns by the dept armorers for a case of coca-cola. However, one day, one idiot officer got involved in a questionable shooting and blamed the light trigger job done by the armory. That caused dept to ordered all department-issued sidearms to be inspected at the armory and if any triggers were lighter than OEM spec were changed back to OEM specs to prevent all future negligent lawsuits.

However, when it involves a civilian shooting, depends on the circumstance of the shooting and statements, the investigation looks for any illegal mods prohibited by the law such as a serial number being filed down or full auto mods. They also inspect the weapon for any defects that might cause the negligent shootings. These findings will be used in the investigation and civil lawsuits. In most civilian shootings, people are not getting into trouble for their guns, but their statements made without their lawyers to guide them.

There are many experts who will tell you not to modify your CCW guns, and the number one reason is the civil lawsuit. The other side's attorney will portray you as a blood-thirsty killer who put so much effort to kill efficiently.

However, you carry a CCW pistol that has an APEX trigger that helps you to reach the trigger easier and qualified the CCW shooting qualification then it shouldn't a problem. I remember an attorney defending a man who shot a home invader told the jury that who wants to drive a car without an adjustable driver seat permanently set in way too close to the steering wheel or opposite. So when another attorney tried to make that man having 1911 with a light trigger a horrible killer, he successfully defended his client by showing that his client's 1911 worked 100 percent safe and he qualified successfully at the shooting classes every year.

So whether you have an apex trigger to have a short pull distance vs mush Glock OEM trigger, what really matters is whether your gun works 100 percent reliable without any safety defects or any illegal gun parts such as an AKA coat hanger in your AR pistol.

This is what I always tell my students for the last 20 plus years. Train constantly and keep it low profile for your CCW guns. Your range or competition guns, make them pretty and ugly as you want them to be. No one cares as long as they are safe and functional. But keep your CCW guns' appearance close to the OEM as much as you can.

@kearal7883 tell Ron to stop being a Boomer.

I literally have, in writing from LASD CCW Unit in writing that modifications are ok.

I love Ron, I took his course. He's an awesome dude. But he's not in the CCW Unit.

                  The rules are changing weekly.

It use to be you needed a LAPD denial letter. Changed.
It use to be you can't carry freedom week mags. Changed.
It use to be you can't modify your firearms. Changed.

Not just singling out Ron, most instructors, are not up to date with everything changing at LASD CCW unit. How can they be.

What is important to me, I have it clear wording from LASD, in writing that freedom week mags, modifications such as triggers and red dots are California legal and therefore ok to carry.

If you want to trust the word of your CCW instructor/LASD Deputy, that's on you. I'm going with what the CCW unit team is telling me, in writing, date and time stamped.

if you're reading Ron, I love you. You're not a Boomer. Kind of.

Now to the point of you're going to scrutinized for a "kill hungry" trigger. I have faith in our American justice system that if I did for one reason or another, had to use my carry firearm, it was for good cause. And if they even have to look at my trigger to consider if it a machinegun, i'm already ****ed.

I think there is a BIG difference as to who does the mods, for example, if I send my Howitzer to Taran Tactical for gunsmithing, the mods would be legal

I called Cobra Tactical and was turned off by their price. Didn't seem like they offered anything above and beyond other training outfits to justify the cost. Plus I believe the class and shooting are done in different locations.. Was intrigued by Medic Up based on recommendations here but ended up going to the Firing Line in Burbank out of convenience. They have 2 classes per week no appt necessary and close to SCV.

I went with Firing line. Good class, heavy on 'what happens in the 99% of self defense situations when you DONT fire you weapon'. Drawing or showing you weapon to deter or stop a threat is Brandishing or a Felony assault if you aren't able to articulate the reasons you did so. Good stuff to know when Karen calls in your plate as 'crazy man with a gun'

I train with my carry gun plenty. Not sure why you wouldn't.
