I'm the friend who DB556762 is referring. I put in my original app on 6/27, 4 days after SCOTUS decision and day after DB556762. I only put in 3 handguns on my app. After I got approved, I contacted SMC Sheriff Dept. and scheduled my range training (8 hours) for February 19, 2023. I asked why so long and was told that they only have 1 class per month and they only hold 20 people per class. However, she also mentioned they are trying to add another class so hopefully they will and my date will be moved up a month or two. If I do get mine moved up, I'll post about that.

Not just SMTO-SO, but it eludes me why each department needs to have its "own" shooting criteria or put on the class themselves? It's not what they "do", waste of money and seems needless.

Let the state set the standard and certify instructors (initially Instructor Instructor classes if needed) to hold the class and send the credential to the agency and the holder.

I said I didn't know what he was talking about and went to SMPD to get the "report" since he asked me to request it and send him a copy. They refused to give me the report. So now I am waiting for him to request it. He said he was not deciding on who gets permitted, but sounded like he is still old school in favor of denials, citing reason could be "not good moral character", but he could not define that. I think they will be getting some lawsuits if they behave in such a nebulous way.

I agree, but with anti-2A AG Bonta in office, the course and shooting criteria that he would impose would probably be even more ludicrous.

The range qualification does not sound like a very high bar, but I have no practice drawing and shooting from a holster or with rapid fire, since ranges around here do not allow either. I went to Los Altos Rod and Gun this weekend, and attempted to practice the five shots, combat reload, five shots, in ten seconds drill. I got busted three times by two different RO's. They require you to pause two seconds between shots. I figured I'd better knock it off before they banned me permenantly.

My range qualification was scheudled for Sept. 18, but I decided I'd better get some training first. So I called to reshcedule today. They let me move to Nov 20. The lady on the phone, Jennifer, was very helpful and said she was sure lots of fols would want to move up.

Good news Number 1: someone is going to get to move up to Sept. 18!

Good news number 2: They offered me TWO dates in October, Oct 16 or 23rd, so they are obviously scheduling additional range days in response to the demand.

Compared to many other counties, SMC is behaving very resonably here.

San Mateo should approve other 8 hour courses held by other Counties as long as it's held by police officers.

My background listed as completed for CA on 7/18, FBI and 7/18, and Firearms on 8/10 and I am in line for review with the county between 370-380 applicants.

If that's true at one class a month with 20 people max, it would take me 18 months for shooting.

From what I understand there is no rapid fire in the qualification. Unless things have changed

Hopefully we will get an update after Sept. 18 class. Very few CCW's have been issued in recent years in SMC.

Thanks for that update. It is good to hear that they are adding other classes. I wonder if some of us that applied early but didn't get dates until next year (mine is Jan) will get the chance to move up to the earlier classes. Although I was using the Jan date as an excuse to try to track down a p365 to buy before then. I know...first world problems...I could be living in some third world locale unable to provide reliable electricity and supply of water.........

Indeed, I am pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the SO is operating. All I did is apply online, get fingerprinted and got an approval 8 weeks later. The lack of qualifier opportunities kinda sucks, but it looks as if they are working on that. Hopefully, they will come up with qualified outsourced training like other counties.

Just read the Alameda and Santa Clara forums for a glimpse of what we could be facing. Of course, you shouldn't need to get a permit at all, but we are where we are. It is nice to see an earlier poster in this forum get the impression that at least someone is the SMCSO is taken aback by the number of applicants. We should be encouraging all those we know with even a slight interest to apply. The bigger the numbers, the better.

it's not when you put it in. It's when they get all 3 of the reports back.

An some peoples paperwork is "cleaner" so no digging or no need for a interview

Then the Sheriffs of the state raise hell and push back. Oh- and the people.

Police officers are not known for being good shots, not even close.

I also forgot to mention that I currently have a non resident concealed carry permit from Virginia. SMSO knows I have this permit because that is one of the questions that is asked on the application. I thought that this could expedite my approval process. I know that my non-resident permit is not valid in California but at least it shows that I am qualifed by law for the permit.

Sounds like you can't practice the entire drill, but even with that two second limitation you can still practice this:
Pistol with one round in the chamber, empty magazine in the pistol.
                                Start from low ready.
Come up and fire one round on target.
Emergency reload, fire second round on target.

If you can get both shots into a 5" circle at 5 yards and have a split time approaching 2 seconds you're doing well.
