Would not surprise me all all to find that someone in the Sacramento politburo noticed that the San Mateo County Sheriff office was doing their best to abide by a ruling of the SUPREME court, and made a couple of calls to put a stop to that.

Or more hopefully, the SO knows that they cannot possibly process all the applicants with their current classes/range qual system within any reasonable time frame, and is in the middle of transitioning to something more efficient. And they don't want to schedule any more folks until they have that set up.

That's what I'd like to believe anyway.....

Definitely hoping the latter is true. I wonder if the impending change in leadership has any effect on this. Maybe they don't want to schedule too many courses into next year. We don't know what policies the Sheriff-elect will implement when she takes over in January.

Could also be a battle of wills with Bolanos and the newly elected but-not-yet- in-the-chair Sheriff.

In this case, I think the simple answer is the most likely answer. They are overwhelmed with the volume and have no possibility of scheduling all the approved applicants into their existing range qualification process. My guess is they are trying to fix that first. Let's see if they get creative....it is not a hard problem to solve.

I spoke with SMCSO today. They are totally taxed with the amount of applicants. They just filled a May 2023 Training/Qualification. They are looking into 3rd party for help in catching up.

That is great to hear. Even doing something that "isn't that hard" can take time. Particularly with the all the potential legal/political issues that would come to the SO if a mistake gets made. I'm pleased that the SO acted immediately after the Bruen decision to eliminate good cause from their current process, and accept and approve applications. Check out the Santa Clara and Alameda forums to see what we could have gotten.

Of course their current process is going to be insufficient, but if they are working towards a better one, that is good news.

Are they still only doing one class a month. I read earlier they scheduled a second class for October. Does that mean there are second classes every month? Sound off on your class dates so we can try to make sense on this. Thx in advance

Good to know. Thanks for the update!

I believe someone earlier said the SO is working on trying to add an additional class in for the remainder of the year (Nov and Dec). But there hasn't been confirmation yet.

                        Wow, you are #190, I was told I'm #371.

Online says CA completed 7/18, FBI completed 7/18 and Firearms completed 8/10. I was told they still needs to finish reviewing my weapons registration and background check. Once that's done I would be moved up the chain of command for review decision, interview, and mandatory training and qualification. I only listed one handgun to carry. Emails from the County have been swift and informational, so I don't want bother them. They said be patient.

Also keep in mind folks, the people working on this (according to their titles) are Reserve Deputies. This likely means they have day jobs and doing one or two of these a year (prior to Bruen) was no big deal.

Now with the overload of requests, it's no easy task to stay above water on these.

also the range staff have a 40hr week.

they have other duty's other than CCW class.

In the past they swapped 1 friday a month for sunday to do the class.

So its going to take some time to staff up and or move people around.

The SO only has so many instructors and RSO's

Had Bolanos (and every other Sheriff and Chief) followed the law in the first place- they wouldn't have created this situation.

Be nice, be professional- but I wouldn't cut the agency any slack. They created the mess. SCOTUS said no, so if that means putting enormous resources in place to dig out of the hole they dug for themselves- so be it and get the hell to it.

                                agreed

But keep in mind the rank and file (all of our poc's ) did not dig the hole the top of the pile did.
