They'll ask about what kind of safe you have. Also, firearms training is good, it shows you're serious.

In regards to the ACSO app, if you don't fill it out they'll remind you that you need to fill out the app. If you're looking for an interview, I don't imagine you'll get one without an app.

Also, as said before, they want receipts to be faxed to them. They'll say it's fine for older ones that you don't have a receipt for, but they want receipts.

They will ask if you have any long guns as well.

Also, if you turned in the DOJ app first because you were not going to fill out the County app, but then fill out the county app at a later date, expect the DOJ paperwork to be lost and to have to fill it out again. Also, wait till your investigator comes back to the room rather than seeing him eating. He'll be in a better mood most likely. They should have the good cause statement, so no need to fill that out again.

I asked about if the initial finding isn't good enough, if they'll hold in abeyance of a court case. Investigator got an amused look on his face, and asked what I knew about that. I said I took no stand one what was happening, that I was made aware of the ability to apply because of the case, then proceeded to haltingly say what I knew. At that point, he said he didn't know.

Question for those who have received their LTC/CCW.

Does Alameda County allow handguns that were DROS'd as single shot (via SSE)?
Do they allow off roster handguns?

Thanks for the tips. Did they tell you why they are asking about other guns / long guns? I can't see how that is pertinent at all.

I will probably just fill out the ALCO form but I'm pretty troubled by the "requirement" that you have 3 references who live in ALCO for the past 3 years. Seems dumb. Living right on the border of 2 different counties and working in a different one means most folks I know are in a different county. So it's more valuable to them to have someone from ALCO who knows me much less well?

What are you getting about with the "eating" thing? Are you just saying try to catch them when they are in a good mood?

If you want to question them, ask things, seem hostile or whatever, go for it. Given that we still are in a discretionary county, I didn't want to rock the boat too much. I felt I already did by asking about holding if denied for good cause in abeyance of Peruta, plus the fact I got up from the table I was waiting at before the 10-15 minutes the deputy said I should sit to ask and saw him holding tupperware, which probably didn't make him happy.

Regards to references, I don't work in ALCO, so I mostly have friends outside the county, or the ones that ARE there are actually young and (gasp!) mobile, so haven't been here for 3 years. I listed 3 references that were from neighboring counties instead, when I asked for guidance. I may actually have some other references now that I think about it from ALCO that would be cool with signing off, so I'm debating adding them as references.

In terms of references, everything: this is still discretionary, and they issue because they want to, they don't have to. If you want to take your stand for issues, and try to get the ALCO app rescinded, the references, the questions they will ask about if you have kids visit, how you store, what other guns in the house, if you have a safe, go for it. I already said I'm not weighing in either way on the court case I mentioned to the deputy, I'm just curious.

As long as this is a privilege and not a right then you can play safe or play hero. I elected to play (relatively) safe. I'm also pretty sure they're not calling appointments for people whose good cause is "self defense" alone. The deputy helped me refine my good cause, or at least knocked out other reasons I had and asked questions that helped me heighten my cause on other factors. Apparently defense against wildlife on hikes isn't very compelling.

Also note that parking on one street has the meters limited to one hour, and likely due to waiting for your interview, getting documents copied, etc. it will be over an hour. I managed to squeak by with no ticket, but I recommend anyone else to get your parking plan ahead of time.

So I finally turned in my paperwork.

Anyone else have the filipino secretary give you a bs pre-interview on your good cause? She pretty much stood there describing why my good cause wasn't good enough.

Also because my good cause was mostly work related, she is requesting that I get a signed note from my supervisor. Is this even allowed or legal? She didn't take any fees from me which is another point of concern. Will this delay them from having to address the 90-day "clock" to approve or disapprove my good cause? I'm very worried that I'm getting the end around or railroaded here.

Lastly, I did end up having a conversation with my department head. He's seemed open-minded on giving the approval letter. However, he does want to address issues such as my work on other public agencies' properties (mainly water district and railroad areas with no general public access). I work for public government and this is an issue. Can anyone help point me to where I could find the laws and statutes addressing any of these potential issues?

So I got to meet one of the few civilian Alameda County CCW holders today. Interesting conversation on Sheriff Ahern (yes, he knows him). Seemed to confirm what most of us already believe, that Sheriff Ahern is anti 2A (at least carry wise, seems he could care less about hunting rifles and shotguns), more interestingly was it seems there is a tremedous amount of outside political pressure from both sides. We all assumed plenty of pressure on the Anti-side, but seems he is getting more pressure than he likes on the Pro-side!

This conversation took place in a semi-professional enviroment with others around, so neither of us pushed or speculated as to more than generalities.

Has anybody who has had recent interviews received any more updates? I have not heard back one way or another...

Thank you, Suture1, for posting. What was your total wait time? I apologize if I missed that in a prior post of yours. After reading the entire thread, I wonder what the status of the CGF efforts in Alameda County are and whether the Sheriff's office will indefinitely delay new applicants.

What is Alameda County Sheriff doing with regard to folks who fear immediate threats, e.g. have taken out restraining orders on assailants?

Update for the group today. I emailed the individual with whom I interviewed with and got the following response:

                    Good day, Mr. Gregg;

Your application is still in process. Your background was recently completed and cleared. Your file has been sent back to me to complete the process. You will be notified by the Internal Affairs secretary when it is complete. No further information is required from you.

                    Thank you.

IIRC, San Mateo, Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Diego all offer you two options: (1) get processed immediately under pre-Peruta standard, or (2) have your app added to the pile awaiting processing after Peruta is finalized (assuming it goes our way). The choice is YOURS. They are doing us a favor in that activists, who keep up w/such things, can get their apps in ahead of the flood that will happen if and when we win Peruta.
