Fear the man with one gun. Don't be silly, CCW the pistol you shoot the best. California is the most pop state. Forty million people wall to wall. They are shoved up against the coast and mostly southland. If you're in SD County plan on these people being there when you shoot your gun. Rotate your wife but not your CCW pistol.

The California magazine capacity limit of 10 makes your argument almost moot. There is ALMOST no point to carrying a full sized pistol in California that normally has a capacity greater than 10. The primary reason is that it's your most reliable gun and you shoot it really well.Well I would definitely put all of them on your permit. The G17, however, is a pretty big gun to carry. Good reason to pickup a G19 though.
Some questions...And I/we don't need answers to these. They're more for you to think through and figure out what makes sense...
Which of these guns do you shoot the best?
And how do you feel about fighting with, and betting your life on, a small sub compact gun, with short sight radius, greater recoil, less capacity, and one that you can barely get your whole hand on?
And I'm not saying the Shield is a bad choice. Only that a lot of people's thought process begins and ends with, "it's sure nice to carry," without considering actually having to fight with it, with all the crazy crap happening in our world these days.
Personally, I would get a Glock 19 and chop the grip to accept Glock 26 factory magazines. This gets you some additional concealability with the option to use G19 and G17 mags with a spacer for comfort and additional palm support.
Alternatively, switch to a gun built around a 10 round mag and increase the caliber. If the capacity infringement is not lifted, then my recommendations are the Glock 30 and Glock 26 since they're on the roster. Roster status may or may not be a requirement of the issuing agency; you'll make that determination for alternates if not.
The roster is very limiting for small carry guns. I know Kahr is maligned, but the Kahr K9 is a very comfortable gun in the hand and is a good shooter. You may find it to be a pleasant alternative to the S&W M&P Shield, which feels too narrow for me.
If trustno12345 can score a Browning Hi Power, you may wish to consider that despite the 10 round limit. The gun is exceptionally concealable due to the grip shape, angle, and resulting overall height.
You may want to consider a six to eight shot revolver in 357 Magnum or 44 Magnum for hiking. I really like the S&W 629 in 44 Magnum loaded with 200 grain Speer Gold Dot 44 Special for urban use (it behaves like 45 ACP). An S&W K-Frame with 3" or 4" barrel will serve you well. Speed Beez offers single speed loader holders that work with all speed loaders, including Safariland ComP I and II loaders. You may be able to flip them around and wear them IWB for more concealment (I am asking them). The key to revolver carry is lots of forward cant, 2.5" to 3.5" barrel, and grips that do not extend past the frame (or "compact grips" if you get a Ruger GP100).Last edited by tomrkba; 08-09-2021, 7:59 AM.Biden's

STANDARD capacity mags are all over this state thanks to Freedom Week and I have no idea what OP does or does not have. Further, full size...or larger guns...still have a longer sight radius, manage recoil better, and allow a full grip on the weapon, compared to sub compacts."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

I agree with this. We don't know what your mag status is, I have pre-2000 standard capacity mags for instance. If you are limited to 11 rounds make them 11 good ones. I LOVE my G30SF with 11 HST+P, and I shoot it better than anything else I have, bigger or smaller. The California magazine capacity limit of 10 makes your argument almost moot. So after waiting the 6-8-15months to get an appointment then you have to wait another 90day for approval, then class, then get permit? lol
This process sounds more about tolerance and discipline. Can you have the patience to deal with this process? OK you can have a ccw. HahaComment

You neglected to mention the roughly $450 you have to fork over between permit fees, classes, etc. But don't you worry...because that permit is only good for two years until you'll have to bend over again and pay another $150+ to renew the damn thing. All of this to exercise what is your GOD GIVEN and constitutionally protected right. So after waiting the 6-8-15months to get an appointment then you have to wait another 90day for approval, then class, then get permit? lol

Welcome to California...where you find yourself actually being thankful for this nonsense because there are plenty of counties that don't issue at all.
