Firstly, many thanks to your team and you for putting all this effort into calguns.net.

That said, dedicated server with 128GB RAM, Xeon E-2388G and NVMe SSD should easily handle much larger forums than calguns.net is. It's just matter of proper config, optimization, resource allocation. Nginx (workers, caching, http2 [currently HTTP/1.1], etc), php( fastCGI [PHP-FPM] for Nginx, Memory, handler, etc), sql (buffers, cache, etc)

So, if everything is done right, the only bottleneck would be NIC, 1Gb vs 10Gb (Elite comes with 1Gb NIC). If average size per request is about 10kB (for example) you'd max out 1 Gigabit connection with about 12500 concurrent requests (not calculating TCP overhead).

Currently there are 3513 users online. If ten percent of them requests page at the same time(lets say 50 requests per page * 10kB), that'd be well over 175,650 kB/s and 1Gb NIC just wouldn't cut it.

The RAM and Disk are overkill but the CPU/Network is an issue.
Most marketplace ads here have 3rd party image hosts which have zero impact on CGN servers, and those ads that do choose to host their photos here are limited to very compressed and small images, and few of them, at least that is how it was in the past.

What I want to know has anyone been fired yet? You never shut down a working platform until you know the other is up and working, and no, don't give us the gaslighting speech about it had to be done this way because that's truly BS. Can anyone imagine if this was some critical inferstructure or some real life critical site, people would be looking for new careers long ago.

Around 1:10pm, I tried getting into the message center and I got a "Gateway Timeout" error. then nothing else would load, OT, CL, the front page for about 10 minutes. every sub and thread would get me a "Gateway Timeout" error. everything slowed down a lot, it took me 20 minutes to get back here to make this edit. I had to clear the data on chrome again.

This is starting to get real pathetic.

IMO "clear browser cache" is a placebo in this case. It is doing exactly nothing to effect a cure. You might feel good doing it, but that's about it.

hopefully OP can look at the even logs around that time and pin point the issue i found.

Its been mostly hit for me rather than misses. For the most part its acting as it should with occasional hiccups. Any 504's aren't 30 minutes or hour + events but 1 minute or so. Using Brave and it shows on 11 cookies and 72kb used.
^^^The above is just an opinion.

It's been slow all the times I been on today. It was slow this AM when I signed on at 0300hrs with just 28 members and 4185 guests about a half hour later it was 25 members and 2535 guests.

No 504 gateway bumps but a few "ERROR" messages when posting. A lot of "WORKING" banners. Yesterday was decent.

For those that think I'm "whining", just reporting as instructed.

Right now, it is working great on my laptop (5:15). Will get back on sometime between 8 & 10 to see how it is doing.
