Would the men of Calguns please not bash the women of Calguns in the Ladies forum?
Thank you.x

in case they didn't hear you, masameet. it bears repeating.
as i remember it the reason this forum was created was to provide a place where women would be comfortable in having their say w/o having to deal with the testosterone displays in many of the other threads.

My intent was to help glockgirl50 with her question about where to stay while attending FS.
I had no intention of ruffling the feathers of the women on Calguns.
Never again........................Comment

Hands Down: Pahrump Nugget...the prices were reasonable, the buffet was VERY cheap, especially if you get their membership card (2 for 1 buffet) and the rooms were nice. Saddle west is FS friendly sort of...they seemed abit paranoid about FS students (and for good reason) but the rooms I thought were cheesy and service sucked.
Pahrump Nugget...about 5 minutes past Saddle west and worth it!Comment

I've been there a few times. Here is what I have learned about how to make the trip more enjoyable.Ladies, Am new to CALGUNS...this is my first posting.
I am headed to Front Site outside Las Vegas NV in April for a four day shooting class. Would like to know if anyone out there has been to Front Site and can recommend a good hotel, not too far away. I've been told most of the hotels nearby are not very good and kind of "tired". Can anybody give me any info?
The Best Western in Parhrump is not bad at all. It is not the Belagio, but is exactly like every other Best Western accross the country. That is where I stay when I go to Front Sight. While I enjoy every minute of every day I am there, they are very long and draining days. The last thing I want to do after 8 hours on my feet in the desert is drive more than 10-15 minutes to get back to the hotel. You and whomever is with you will be so tired, you won't care about the hotel. All you will care about is getting their quickly. The shower, indoor toilet, and bed will be calling your name. You'll want them as close as you can get them. That is much more important than how fancy the hotel is. Remember, Front Sight does not have indoor plumming. Just out-houses. So if you are staying in Vegas it will be the longest drive of your life back to the hotel.
Front Sight is not a Vegas vacation. If you want to enjoy Vegas I strongly recommend adding 1-2 days to the end of your trip to enjoy Vegas after you are done training. The last thing you or your fellow students want is to be hungover and have a gun in your hand. This is a hard thing for people to accept...but after several trips there...trust me, add at least 1 day to your trip for Vegas. It is the smart thing to do. Don't try and do both at the same time.
Dress appropriately. This is not the time to look cute (not that you could ever not look cute). It is the time to learn how to use a gun. Most women here on Calguns know this already as they have been shooting for a while. I am not trying to talk down to you here, but I have seen way too many women try and wear shorts, open toed shoes, and tops that showed clevage not to mention this. Your feet, legs, and "the girls" will not be happy at all when they get burned by scolding hot brass.
The ideal summer attire would be crewneck t-shirt with normal short sleeves, full length cargo pants, crew socks, a pair of hiking boots or running shoes, a baseball cap (keeps the brass from getting between your glasses and eyeballs so this is a critical item), balistically sound sunglasses like Oakleys or shooting glasses (not cheap sunglasses), shooting ear muffs, and a light coat or vest as a concealment garment. Add lots of layers and gortex for winter.
The ideal handgun rig is a kydex straight drop hip holster with no additional retention device over your strong side hip, a kydex double mag pouch over your support side hip on a nice sturdy nylon trainers belt. Leather holsters stick, and nylon holsters come with straps that get in the way and are a safety hazzard.
If they are still offering the night session bring a hand held flashlight with an off on button on the tail cap like those made by SureFire, Insight, etc.
There are no facilities to run and grab a drink or get a quick bite to eat. So bring twice if not three times the amount of food and drinks you think you will need with you. Worst case it sits in the trunk. The Beach Cafe pre-order meals are WONDERFUL. Surprisingly so. The chicken sandwhich with the stuffing and cranberry sauce on it is my favorite. I get a craving for it every time somebody mentions Front Sight. I pre-order a meal and a bottle of gatorade from the everyday and then keep some breakfast bars and bottled water in the trunk. It might sound like overkill, but better safe than sorry. Those are going to be some very long days on the range and if you fail to bring enough food and drinks you will very much regret it.
Don't try and bring your own ammo. Buy it from Front Sight. Traveling with ammo is bear. Any money you save will be offset by freight costs.
If you do try and bring your own ammo, factory new FMJs only. No reloads. No cheap brands like Wolf. Only reliable brand name factory new ammo is allowed on their range. This is an iron clad rule with them. Fight it and you are messing up your trip over a few cents savings...which is not smart. Pony up for the good stuff and move on.
The biggest bit of advice I can give? Have an open mind, pay close attention to the safety instructions...which are very easy to follow, don't stress yourself out, and enjoy the heck out yourself. That's all you really need to do. The rest of my advice are just things I found make just a little bit easier.
So have a great time. Sure wish I was going with ya!Last edited by tacticalcity; 02-10-2011, 11:52 AM.Comment

my dad and I always stay at the Saddle West
It's all right if you don't mind smoke, but that's VEGAS BABY!
As far as food, it's decent and will get you through the day.
We always go to some decent grocery store and just stock up on some deli meet and bread, and some other stuff, and we just store it in a cooler in the car, cover it with blankets and what not to keep it really insulated through those 110 daysComment

Towards the end of day three and four most people are pretty bushwhacked and the extra driving time seems to be a considerable deterrent to staying in outer Vegas. Those who don't shower eat and go straight to bed would probably use that extra time to dry practice, extra time is a luxury.

I'm typing this from the Pahrump Nugget. Decent hotel, lacking microwaves inroom. Driving distance from Front Sight is about 30 minutes (a bit longer this morning with 2" of fresh snow covering everything.
Front Sight lunch room has 3 microwaves, each with a bit of a line, but there is plenty of time at lunch to get it heated and consumed without a need for haste.
We brought home made soup for lunches, and for dinners we prepared single servings of meals before we left, just pop in the microwave (brought our own since the hotel did not have them inroom) for a few minutes and you are eating very well, and for much less than the cost of the delivered meals (which appear to be very good for what they are, but a cold sandwich vs homemade beef soup on a day with 2" of fresh snow on the ground? It's an easy decision!)
