Recently my wife and I were introduced to IDPA and we are both kind of hooked. She wanted to pick out her own gun, and and she was very open minded about it. We tried sigs, Glocks, a browning hi power, CZs, m&ps, and an HK. After 3 range trips she got it down to the m&p 9 and a sig 239. 2 hours of back to back firing on (in my opinion) very different guns and she went with the M&P. The thing that she was finally able to articulate was that she liked the trigger on the Sig (I agree with her on that), but the lower bore axis and balance of the M&P won her over. She told me the M&P just felt right in her hand.
I told her that I heard that apex does good work on the M&P trigger, and that we would still be money ahead buying the M&P and getting the trigger tuned over the sig. I told her this after she decided, so as not to influence her decision.
I also that noticed that she was shooting a bit faster on the M&P. She didn't notice it, but she ran two full mags back to back and I timed her. She put 10 rounds downrange with the M&P in the same time as the sig in 8. I think that indicated which gun really felt more comfortable for her.
So we bought it yesterday and started the 10 day wait. She is really excited because it was really her first gun she got to choose herself. She said she even dreamed about it last night
Moral of the story: let your lady pick her own gun in her own way and just support her in her decision. It's HER gun, let it be hers and you will have a shooting partner for life.

But at least she's now willing to tag along and knows how much fun a Ruger MkII can be
