So, every firearm that leaves their store has to be locked before it goes out the doors.

Sounds like they are just making sure none of their clients get popped. But they could just tell you that.

Yes - I included my lock with my pistol and box, other party handed my his locks with many accessories. The fact they left the store I guess would be considered a future no-no. I will always lock them going forward and take the keys with me.

So boys and girls - to prevent future drama, if buyIng a pistol via Private Party, insist and ensure the weapon has a suitable lock installed BEFORE walkIng into the store and make them give you the keys (problem solved). Any new handgun should come with a lock, so problem there too. Not sure how a multi-year old safe receipt will work for long guns, since they can hold many items, and no one is really keen on stating how many items they have in a safe (or how many safes they may have).

The law does not have to make sense, which is why there are aspects which don't make sense.

Also, you have to remember Federal law as well since a lock is required for handguns (which has not been published, as required).

When you buy a firearm from a private party, they can also put on the receipt that they also sold you a lock.

Why would you want to penalize a business for carrying out a transaction in the manner that they feel is best.
We are concerned about our rights disappearing, and reporting this business under these circumstances would be an attempt to limit his rights.
If you feel that his process is excessive (and I agree that it is) then you have the right to take your business elsewhere. But to report him to the authorities for over protecting himself sounds like the same liberal tactics being used by the oppressors of our 2nd Amendment rights.

Sorry, don't agree with you. His motivation is profit plain and simple. I would liken it to when you buy a car and have to pay for the "protection package" at $299. It's not necessary, not mandated, but simply a way to gouge the customer for additional property. It really is all water under the bridge for me, I spoke to the shop when I took my long guns out of "jail" and very specifically voiced my opinion of their deceptive practices and that I would not shop there again. It will cost them much more in the long run than screwing me out of my $40 and that appeases me. The opinions of kemasa and CrazyCobraManTim make the most sense and I will apply those techniques when I next have to conform to the DOJ rules and regulations. Other than that, the post was meant to be informative to others. I sincerely hope that other Calgunners simply stop buying at the offending and opportunistic gun store in question and take their business down the street to the others that are at least up front about the lock requirement and in conformance with DOJ requirements. The final straw was then when I left the shop with the two locks for the rifles that I was picking up, I wasn't required to install the locks. I simply took the rifles in a case, put into my car trunk and drove off. If they were really concerned about protecting themselves instead of simply squeezing some additional profit out of me I would have thought that they would have required me to use the locks. So it goes. This really is beating a dead horse at this point in time. The guns are at my place of residence, happily sitting in my safe (for which I don't have a receipt since I bought it many many years ago). Let's let this thread die off. If someone has a similar experience and wants to expose a dealer with poor practices, start another one. Just my 2 cents.

If the locks had been included with the firearm, then it would have been acceptable. Otherwise, you need a receipt within 30 days. The Feds require a lock, which is why the safe affidavit is an issue with handguns.
You could buy a lock from a friend and get a receipt. Some FFLs also do lock exchanges.

The store was not off-base. You could have also bought a safe.

the shops I use dissagree.........1 used to have a sign posted that a safe affidavit wouldn't work on handguns...........now they use the safe affidavit on handguns
