EDIT: NO LONGER ACCEPTING SHIPMENTS FOR BULLET BUTTON FIREARMS OR RECEIVERS THAT YOU INTEND TO REGISTER AS AN ASSAULT WEAPON. ANY ORDERS PLACED AFTER 11/22/16 WILL BE UNABLE TO BE DROSED TO YOU IN TIME TO TAKE POSSESSION BY 12-31-2016. ANY FUTURE SHIPMENTS WILL BE RETURNED AT YOUR EXPENSE. FOR ANYBODY PLACING ONLINE ORDERS, DO YOUR PART AND VERIFY THAT YOUR FFL IS ACCEPTING SHIPMENTS AND ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT ORDERS PLACED TODAY FOR OTHER FIREARMS (SHOTGUNS, PISTOLS, BOLT ACTION ETC) MAY NOT BE ABLE TO BE DROSED FOR A FEW WEEKS FROM WHEN IT IS DELIVERED.
Ok here is my public service announcement for everyone who is looking to buy a firearm from an online vendor before the end of the year. Based on what I've noticed recently I wanted everyone hear a few things.
1. Online orders seem to be taking longer than usual. Make sure you check with your FFL before you order to be sure they are still taking online orders and have time and staff to accommodate.
2. Don't wait until the last minute. Sometimes we get your gun without all the required paperwork. If you wait until the last minute and your sending FFL forgets something like their license or CFLC we can't start your DROS. This could result in you not DROSing in time.
3. DOJ delays. They happen even if you aren't a prohibited person. For whatever reason you should give time just in case and DOJ delays can take up to 30 days.
4. Some vendors online are hard to get in touch with. It seems like the smaller outfits (like the ones who still have those Anderson receivers now that the big boys are sold out) aren't that good at answering emails and phone calls. God forbid your order is wrong or something.
5. Have all your documentation ready NOW. Don't wait until it's your time to DROS to inform us your address is wrong on your ID and now you're scrambling to find alternate documentation that ATF will accept. If you have proof of residency issues resolve them now.
6. Be patient with us. I'm sure others are just as busy as we are. I know we don't have the staff to do 10 times the normal DROS.
7. If your FFL has a certain way they want things done respect it. Remember you chose them not the other way around. Like us, we had to resort to scheduling appointments for transfers due to recent demand.
8. Give us enough time to log in your gun. Yes. UPS delivered it today, along with 20 other packages we haven't opened yet. Let us log in your gun for ATF in our book and verify the paperwork we needed. Please don't call 20 minutes after delivery. Personally if you haven't heard from us within 24 hours then we have a problem. Like your seller didn't tell us who the gun is for! It happens all the time.
9. If you ordered from multiple places online don't count on all your firearms arriving at the same time. Or even at all. Yes some places are out of stock yet still selling guns then telling people they are back ordered. Check the vendors cancellation and return policies.
10. Personally for those of you who use us to transfer we are telling everyone the following. Make sure to your guns are delivered to us by December 1st. This is the only way we guarantee that we can get you in to DROS by the 20th. I'm sure others are doing something similar.
11. When your FFL calls work around their schedule not yours. If you can't make it to DROS because you work, have kids to pick up, or whatever we get it. But if its that important for you to get your guns before December 31st I wouldn't dilly dally around.
12. When you pick up I'm sure we are all expecting to be slammed busy on the last few days of the year. Don't be a Johnny come lately and wait until 10 minutes before the FFL closes to pick up your guns. Shop employees want to go home too after a full shift and still have plenty of paperwork to do even after you leave the store.
That's it for now I'm sure somebody else can chime in here about what they think but I just wanted everyone to get how busy all FFLs will be with in the next month.
Thanks.
EDIT: make sure your online vendor has your current up to date information. I had one yesterday where the phone number they provided Buds was "no longer in service". Make sure your info is right before you check out online!
