I applied and was passed over by several agencies throughout my early 20's. When I finally did get a job offer, I got two within the same week and had to choose quickly one or the other. You have to tough it out and keep trying. Bear in mind that nowadays there are a lot of combat veterans coming out of the military and making the transition into LE. It makes sense that these folks are attractive candidates due to their experience and military bearing.

They also get preference credits that can move them above "band 1" in L.A. County to the "V band". Not sure what other agencies do but FD personnel dept told us V band would be mixed with band 1 but V band would exhaust long before band 1.
I was passed over by 7-8 depts. back when they were "only hiring minorities, all you got to do is show up". After I got County my offer I got 3 more smaller departments offers. I actually got an offer from one department to replace a guy that was in my class.

Why mentor somebody from Kenya? Not to be a jerk but when I was an FTO I had a trainee from Haiti who had poor driving skill, poor marksmanship but what got him terminated was his conduct around women. In his country women must submit to policemen for dating and etc, etc. So he 'defaulted' to Haitian bully cop instead of American professional peace officer and he went to college in America

Keep at it, nothing worth having comes easy. Given your timeframe and story, I think you applied to the same agency as one of my coworkers. He was also not accepted.

OP- I am in the same boat. I have applied to multiple agencies without much success. I have been to the last stages of the hiring process with multiple agencies, yet did not receive the "golden ticket". 2014 was a rough year and I did not make much of an attempt to get hired, and now I regret that decision. My advice to you, from my own personal experiences as well as advice from friends who are current officers, is to just continue to apply, apply, apply. If obtaining a 4 year degree is not something you can do first, then at least enroll in some courses to show that you are willing to work towards that goal. Use your free time to go on ride alongs, volunteer wherever interests you, and do anything that will spice up the resume and set you apart from the other applicants. I was recently told that sometimes you may end up getting the right pool of applicant, a good panel, or a good background investigator.

That's cool. He'll prob get hired. It seems the longer you've been a American, the more chances you got skeletons in your closet. Ha. Agencies love fresh citizens, remarkably clean and new backgrounds.

I am not an LEO. I have worked with a great many LEO as a DDA and DAG on the trial team. I used to work for a regulatory LE agency. I suggest that you you not be discouraged, stay the course, and do whatever you can to improve your qualifications. Who knows, someday you might be the one making the decisions about who gets accepted and who has to try again.

I don't get it. I got turned down from a local department that has been hiring a lot.

I got an email pretty much saying "Hey you qualify, you passed background, and you were looked at by the hiring board. The board has concluded we don't want you. See you next year!"

I was seriously the textbook perfect candidate in my opinion.

Pros:
-No criminal record.
-No drug usage (not even weed).
-No heavy drinking (1 maybe 2 drinks a week, occasionally)
-No debt.
-No speeding tickets.
-Former police explorer.
-A.S. Degree.
-EMT, CPR, HazMat, and lots of certs from FEMA.
-Did well on the written test.
-Did great on the physical fitness test.
-Scored well on the oral board.
-Cleared background.
-Passed the polygraph with flying colors.
-Cleared 2 psych tests. (written and interview).
-Made it to the hiring board.

Cons:
-Don't speak Spanish. (English only)
-Haven't been on a ride along yet.


The academy holds 60 people and there were 52 candidates left! So why on earth did I get dumped?

Now here is what I'm going to do.
-Do a ride along. Heck, maybe two.
-Keep applying. I made it to the hiring board, so to me that means I can make it somewhere. I don't have to worry about a background investigation again. I'm not giving up. I want a job bad!

Well on paper you sound great but let me ask you this - your last sentence " I want a job bad". Do you just want/need a job or do you want a career in LE?. Makes a big difference and may come out in some fashion during your interviews. If you really want a LE career then do not be discouraged by a set back. Most of us did not get hired by the first agency we applied for and if you truly want a LE career and you have the requirements needed then you will achieve your goal. Smaller agencies are harder to get in then larger agencies. Some LE type classes in your education always look good. Remember with a 4 year degree you graduate the academy for intermediate posts which is higher salary also so maybe purse that as you continue applying....good luck
