CHP future pistol purchase?

Someone once told me to expect the CHP to change their pistols again in the future. (date unknown) And I kind of believe this as more and more agencies are switching to a polymer pistol for less weight, etc.

Any ideas or opinions out there?

At some point...everything changes.

CHP has a good gun. If they choose to change... It will likely to be to another good gun.

People like to argue about the tools, but the tools are so much less the issue than the one using the tools.

I was issued a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 last year. I was able to purchase my issued Beretta at a good price from the department. The only reason I switched to the S&P was to buy my old Beretta, and buy the M&P when I retire.

Many people complained about the heavy trigger pull of the M&P9, but I didn't mind. I pretty much shot out the center on slow fire and combat targets. In my opinion, it is a very simple and very decent pistol. As a matter of fact, all my groups are pretty much the same whichever pistol I shoot anyways. Whatever the CHP chooses, I believe they will have a good firearm.

They will eventually. They hung onto the first batch of 4006 pistols for a long time. Wasn't it close to 20 years? As long as Smith is making replacement parts for them or they bought them already it could be a decade or more later.

Of course I did hear they bought SIG rifles to replace their Nam era guns so who knows if SIG will offer them a sweetheart deal.

Someone posted a story here about how Glock or Sig or someone presented a much better offer to CHP vs the Smiths and they declined. So I'm assuming someone is in bed with someone.

It was Sig. And you're right on someone being in bed with someone else.

I find that hard to believe that CHP was offered a "better deal" by Sig, thereby undercutting S&W. LASD was happy with Sig's during the testing for the 92F replacement. However, Sig Would NOT budge on lowering the price below S&W's handgun price. As a result, S&W won the contract for LASD and Sig lost.

I think LASD has more sworn personnel than CHP does too, so Sig Lost out but I don't think they really cared either.

Yep. My agency got 200 of those A1's. Yowza (!) have those rifles been shot! I put a bore scope into several of them so far and I gotta' tell you, those leades are a lot longer and fainter than I would've liked. We are now looking at the possibility of buying some new uppers and just storing the old mil-surplus stuff on a pallet. Hat is off to CHP: somebody is training a lot over there!!

My experience with Sig has been great trade values for old guns. Our rep from Sig is very responsive, especially when the rumor we might go to Glock got back to him. Our trade-ins have always been high, and our new gun cost (especially through Adamson or Davidsons) has never been more than $150-200 net. This is one of the reasons we've stuck with Sig Sauer.

The CHP is not changing guns. The S&W 4006TSW is and will still be the standard issue. The CHP is looking at replacing the S&W4013(The Shorty 40). This gun is issued to Captains, Chiefs and specialized ISU units. The CHP is running out of parts for these old pistols and they are looking for a replacement for the 4013 NOT the 4006

CHP is authorized to carry Glock's as back-ups,,, that might be a clue..
