Antioch PD MRAP

Why did the Antioch PD purchase a MRAP (Mine Resistant- Ambush Protection Vehicle)? This is a police department not a military base. I have never heard of any IED attacks, RPG toting thugs, or any other such dangers warranting such a vehicles purchase. This is not Iraq. I find this highly disturbing.

It's all about perspective friend.
Go kick in a few doors. Do some high risk search warrants. Deal with people that would gladly kill you or coworkers just to say they did. Or to avoid the rest of their lives in prison. They're bought and paid for. Would you rather they just go sit in a depot somewhere, rot in the sun ice or snow?
At the end of the day it's really just a glorified armored truck. Nothing more , nothing less. I'm sure if you worked for Antioch pd and had to deal with the crap they do you wouldn't be so critical. Heck, next time Antioch pd had some form of pr event go check it out. They are a rather unique and neat vehicle to inspect up close.

THIS I agree with, but thats an Army failure not LEO. I'd love some MRAPs in my unit, we don't even have enough seats for PAX transport as it is.

Though, some SPC would probably run over a line of parked cars or somethiong....

DOD Logistics has always been a bit back aswards. I'd actually love to see some e-4 mafia cruising the streets in an MRAP; a lot of paperwork but once the fire dies, it would make for good bar stories.

I think what all the reasonable people here are forgetting is that some of these posters are the same ones that complain about cops using the AC in the cars despite having no knowledge of police work or love of cops for that matter. The same ones that have to be reminded Hollywood is not the manual for real life. You're not going to change the mind set of a hater.

As to the maintenance costs, I am thinking not getting it blown up, not driving it through rough terrain and exposing it to baby powder sand and whatever else our troops go through will lessen the expenses. 60k miles on roadways has to be a lot easier than 5k miles on rough terrain. Also, most city corp yards are pretty good at converting things over for whatever purpose. The economics may be funny as to how things are billed, but I am sure they will make things work.

But to the OP, thanks for the reminder why the Brady's are doing well at dividing everyone on the 2A issue. I thought we were pass the judgement on things BECAUSE they look scary aspect.

My department were offered surplus HMMVs several years ago. There was nothing we really needed them for, they were all open topped stripped down models so we said, "Thanks, but no thanks." It would've cost the county a ton of money to make them usable for our department. They were also too big to be practical to use up at "The Ranch" on the narrow dirt roads.

I read somewhere back they get them for free but that parts are going to be very hard to get when needed and they do cost a bit to run. Also, most agencies will be putting around $80,000.00 into them for equipment that they need to have in them.

There are a bunch of IEDs found every year on city streets. They are not usually artillery shells but pipe bombs and grenades are more common than you would think.

Please see the SLA story since they planted IEDs on LAPD cars....now you have heard of an IED attack.

Its a free flippin' armored vehicle, the fact that is labeled "mine resistant" is consequential and completely irrelevant. They're painted with CARC paint, a chemical weapon resistant paint. What, are local cops planning on utilizing Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons? Of course not.

I'd rather the trucks it sit in the back lot of Local PD then rust in some Army base boneyard.

Because NOW they have to go outside and replace all of their 12GA landmines with tungsten 12GA rounds instead of the lead buckshot they were using...

Does anyone know if they got extra MRAP's for parts? My old agency got several helicopters from the military and that was to make one functional helicopter. We also got helmets & etc as well.

I know Sacto SO had an incident where they shot a suspect from inside an armored car.
