i've had tons of station boots break even american made ones those zippers are always the first thing that breaks on them. although i don't personally use 5.11 except for their sweaters and jackets for work.

Maybe you need to pick and choose from their stuff? I love their taclite pants, rifle bags and pistol bags. Never tried their boots though, always had excellent luck with Bates.

Danner, Danner, Danner. Went through many boots til' I manned up and paid for Danners. Starting my third year with them, had them reconditioned once. Best $$ I ever spent on gear.

5.11's got lots of good ideas, but the quality in a lot of it is definitely lacking.

I've had good luck with Boots from Carolina, Haix and never heard a bad thing about Whites or Red Wings either except the price.

Shocker, a clothing company has crappy boots.

Buy things from companies that know what they're doing. I buy boots from Merrell because Merrell is a boot company - not a clothing company. 5.11 is a clothing company first, a bag company second, and a tactical accessories company third - making boots comes somewhere after that.

Would I buy a backpack from the people that make my boots? Probably not, because it's not their skill set - same reason knife manufacturers rarely make good guns and guns manufacturers rarely make good knives. Same reason Samsung doesn't have any business making refrigerators and GE doesn't have any business making tablet computers.

I had a Pair of 5.11 boots - after three weeks of them killing my feet I GAVE THEM AWAY. Oh and I warned the Guy!

From what I've been hearing from friends in the duty gear manufacturing business, 5.11 has been subcontracting out the majority of their manufacturing work overseas going for the quantity over quality market. In recent years the quality of their products have gone down the tube.
