Tripper, Guns change every so many years and half the officers I work along side in CHP don't buy there guns. The state does not give us a very good deal on the firearm. The 4006 prior to the current version was offered to us I think was around 425$. Mine jammed on a regular occurrence which was passed down to me from an officer who retired. Mine was one of the first of the series produced for CHP. As for retired officer, our association still does not pay for your firearm you retire. Every department is different. Boltmopar, you should be glad you didn't get a CHP gun they are beat to death for many years. I did buy the .38 revolver though from a more senior officer for a steal. All three guns have CHP stamped on them.

One more thing. CHP badge numbers are sequential. That's why we are just got into the 21,000 badge numbers. Badge numbers are never put on any of our equipment unless you write on it yourself. The old timers about to retire start in the 11,000 badge number range and guys coming out are 21,000. Police Departments may recycle their badge numbers but not CHP. I wish I could use 00001 for my badge number. I heard within the next couple of years we are looking at switching to a Glock or S&W M&P. Enjoy your gun you got a good price

Also, if your CHP ID starts with an A, they issue you a stapler, not a pistol. Sounds like another agency numbered that 4006.

The 4006's now have 2 serials. One side has a CHP*** # and the right side has a letter*** #. Not sure if it's like that for the shorty forty

I bet its badge number, I'll ask a few chp if they had 4006, and if their badge# was on it , or see if what they currently have is marked

I doubt a large agency stamps a badge number on an issued weapon anymore. Maybe pre 70's or so. What does a large agency (like chp) do with the gun if its recycled, due to termination of employment with the officer? Scratch out the old badge number?

I have never worked for the CHP, but FWIW, when I saw the "A", I thought of "Administrative". Like some one said above, Admin probably got issued a stapler, not a firearm. But take it for what it's worth.

Maybe it's Spike's old pistol?

The 4006s from the '90s (without rail) were not marked "CHP." The guns from that generation were marked with two numbers - the serial number and the "control number," i.e. 'A1929.' The control number ensured parts control for each weapon (slide, frame, barrel). The newer 4006TSWs have a numbered CHP stamp on it.

FWIW, I never (to date) experienced any issues with either generation of the 4006. Of course, some did/do. If you polled a large agency (5-7k sworn), I would be surprised if you didn't hear similar stories - no matter the weapon system. Before I go, I will buy my TSW.
