CHP 4006

I had a question about a issued 4006. Not the TSW with the rail, but the one with the adjustable sights. Anyways, are the pistols marked CHP? or did they just have another number stamped on them. Mine has A1787 stamped on the frame, slide, and barrel. So is this a CHP pistol. I only bought it because it was $350. Thanks

Every issued handgun from CHP I have ever seen had "CHP" stamped on it.

Ok thank you. I have a model 68 that also has CHP stamped. I only asked because a friend told me that's how they marked the newer stuff. I figured I would ask someone who knows. Still can't beat the price.

Some agencies stamp their own serial number on the firearm. The one I examined last week had the original manufacturer's serial number and the agency's serial number. It appeared to be done by the factory, also.

It was like "AAAxxxx" for factory serial number and "XPDxxx" for the agency.

It does have the factory serial number but that other number ia stamped on barrel, slide, and frame

I bet its badge number, I'll ask a few chp if they had 4006, and if their badge# was on it , or see if what they currently have is marked

I have also seen CHP marked 4006. Mine is a real tack driver but not CHP issued.

I think that is a CHP badge number. It's been awhile since I ran into a CHP officer but 17Kish would be a pretty old school officer. I seem to recall one of the old timers around here, probably started in the early 80s, had a badge number of about 19000.

A 1700 series badge number would have been well before the transition to auto loaders. CHP was in to 6000 by the 70's, not sure if anyone could have stayed on that long. It could also have been one of the State Police badge numbers, before the 2 agencies became 1.

It is not a CHP 4006. They are all stamped with CHP and the Officers badge number is not on the gun. That would not make much sense because once an officer retires their gun goes to a new guy graduating out of the academy. I know this because i carried the 4006 on duty and now carry the new TSW. The older model I had issues with. I never had problems with the new model. Oh, and badge numbers for officers still active start around 12000-21000

Ok thanks for the input Jeff. I just bought it because it was a third gen smith for 350. I have no idea what that other number means. I may just call S&W or get that letter of authenticity to see where it is really from. As for reliability, I have never had a problem with any third gen. The only TSWs I have are a 3913 and a 5906. Still looking for a decent 10XX. I still got to post pics and maybe some one can tell me what it means or is.

Every retired officer I know, left with their duty weapon, the 'officers' association buys it for them. Badge numbers, in my experience, are not assigned numerically in order of hire or anything like that, there is a diff methodology applied to it. Officers I know, are also given the option to buy their own duty weapon when the department 'trades in' for example when they went from smith 66 to smith 469, then from smith 469 to glock 22, then again from glock 22 to gen 4 glock 22. I know a few that has every one of those, which were their own duty weapons.
