I have an oral board coming soon. I have been studying the city, and brushing up on my speaking skills. I took a speech class last quarter at my school, I still attend a J.C. though I'm 26, and working toward transferring to a CSU more for a personal accomplishment.

Anyway, I have not had the opportunity to ride with this department, the written was a few weeks ago and I was just notified I passed and orals are next week. Is that a major setback in the oral panel being I am also not involved in volunteering with the community?

What are some points if people don't mind sharing I should emphasize during the panel or any advice?

There really are no tough questions for an entry level position, just use common sense. I would suggest wearing a nice suit, be on time, respectable and confident.

You might want to study up on the overall picture.. Like the population served, mission statement of the Department, special programs. Look up the web page and see all the stuff they think is important enough to put there.

dont just ramble on about the different community programs or specialized units the department has. try and mention how one them may relate to you or something in your background that will give them the impression that it is something you would excell at

For those who have sat as a proctor, is there anything that is a significant turn off. I've narrowed my intro to basically sum up not where I'm from and went to school, but I'm trying to focus how my upbringing would make me an asset to the agency. Briefly mentioning challenges and how they shaped my character. Sound like a plan or could I shoot myself in the foot and bore them?

From my experience, oral boards range from, "Tell me about yourself," to being given a specific scenario and asked how you'd respond to it.

However, most questions generally center on past performance in certain areas applicable to law enforcement. Like, when's the last time you made a decision and had to defend it.

I just went through an oral board last week and let me give you the best piece of advice I can, RELAX! After the first couple minutes you realize that it's nothing more than just talkng.

The federal agent board for us is 5 hours at a minimum and its situational awareness, telling about yourself and common sense. A lot of just talking it seemed after the first 20 or so minutes. There was an ASAIC and two agents doing the interview/board.

5 Hours?!? That would be insane, I would not want to sit there and talk to anybody for a constant 5 hours.

You have no choice. Everyone calls it the 5 hour dreaded interview. Just be calm, be yourself, be honest, and use common sense.

Good luck! When you're done, write down as many questions and scenarios that you can remember. It will help you better prepare for the other oral panels you will have during your career...
