Awww come on Ron, do you know how much I learned from Ponch & John? Then when Cagney & Lacey came out, I knew I was ready to put in for homicide!!! Those were some of the best "training films" ever!!!!

No i am not, all i said was some of it was excellent advice. I never said it should be SOP and material that should be taught by academy instructors, some of you gentlemen keep mentioning on how its comparable to cops. The fact is that a recruit was killed, after filming one of the episodes, so i say to you how do you edit that out?

LASD stopped doing the show, "The Academy" for many reasons, but the primary driving forces were it was a distraction to training, and they kept focusing on the screw ups, rather than the efforts of the majority, who were performing as expected.

I think having a film crew along while someone is on training is stupid. Training is hard enough without having to worry how you look on camera. All trainees make mistakes, that's part of the program.

Makes me wonder, did the film crew cause enough of a distraction where this officer got killed because of it.

I saw a lot of quality deputies make mistakes when COPS was filming at our station that they normally wouldn't have made.

Not LE but I think rookies was a good show. What I got out of it was to put your self in LEO shoes. Then you get an idea of why LEOs act a certain way. Also how things go from 0-60 out of nowhere. Hence the episode where an assualt victim gets arrested for trying to avenge his attack by shooting at his attackers after talking with officers. And of all weapons a hi-point which jams lol

Watching rookies didnt really teach me any life lessons or things that could help me in deadly situations, but it helped with little things like being ready to write reports and take statements, observing details, and even how to just try your best and do what you can. Seeing others making simple mistakes usually assures me that I'm not alone and shouldn't punch myself in the head if I misinterpret something small or just forget to write something down. Everyone makes mistakes, this show helped me see that.

Btw I'm not an LEO but I am in the training process so this definitely helped, as any information regarding my career choice would.

Definitely!! When they were out with us, I watched some down right stupid stuff occur because large ego having deputies wanted their spotlight...unlike most of us who turned and ran when the deputies riding with the crew would show at a call.

Avoid cameras like the plague. They will edit, cut, and do whatever to make you look however they want. Honestly that show made the rookies look incompetent. We all make mistakes and we all have those oh crap moments and if you strung them all together in 20 minutes you would end up looking like Barney Fife.

Ive watched about 15mins so far and Im guessing you are correct. Cutesy girl and an extremely large guy(how did he not lose weight in academy?)
