State over private. If you are young enough, don't stop there. Sheriff, PD or CHP. Currently, we are under attack. The proposed "sweetheart" deal of a contract proposal is nothing close to what is being reported. Even you stated you would be part of the problem. Not the case at all. Once in , you will see what our liberal state has done. Inmate medical care is better than my insurance. Lawsuits rule the day. If you don't comply, paper will follow. The days of the knuckle dragger are gone. Those that still try end up in the soup line. Yes, the pay is decent. The retirement for new hires is still up in the air. Can you make $100k? Yes, if you enjoy 16 hours a day dealing with Californias finest.
The only benefit of working in a private joint will be you have an idea of what you are getting in to. It does not help in the hiring process. I think Military experience is the only preference you can receive.

Confirming California C/O and Parole Agents are not 24 hour peace officers. We have specialized units SSU and OCS who have special agents that are 24 hour peace officers. We can carry off duty as long as we qualify quarterly (no limit on number of guns). Earlier this year, I attended a hearing for an Assembly Bill at the capitol to convert all Parole Agents to 24 hour peace officers. The union opposed the bill and there are some revisions the last I herd. I forgot there are approximately 50 parole agents from the fugitive apprehension team (FAT) who have full time peace officer status.

From what my neighbor told me, the high turnover for CDC is because either the pressure or the state shipping you somewhere crazy, like way northern CA or the desert.

He said after a couple of years and some seniority, you can get close to $100k/yr with benefits and overtime.

Peace Officer status means you are a "cop". Most officers only get it while they are working, but some can have it 24/7. CDC officers are able to apply and get easier a CCW, especially if they work special duty, like SHU - or a max or supermax prison like Pelican Bay.

There is a lot of misinformation. Cdcr officers have peace officer status 24/7. Our peace officer authority stops when we go home at the end of our shift. But our status stays with us . We do not have to apply for a ccw we simply go to a range and qualify with our weapon of choice . We are not limited to any specific number of weapons. I currently only carry one, but of course if i wanted to i could have 50. Our authority is not limited to only prison grounds. We conduct transports of inmates out to different venues outside the prison. As well as performing other duties outside the prison. All cdcr officers are peace officers regardless of your post, position. And if your an overtime hog you can make upwards of 100k a year. But remember you will miss out on alot of holidays and family functions.
I haven't been able to spend thanksgiving or Christmas with the family for the last 5 years.

I've been a CO for 12 years for a Sheriffs department, if I can go back and do it again I'd have went to work for CDC. More opportunity for advancement and there isn't the "good ol boys". I would have loved to work in IGI among other things that they have that the locals don't.

Warhawk has it right. I'm a C/O and if you're going to choose to work in this environment you might as well get the best pay and best training to stay safe and that means go state not private. You will have ccw rights so long as you qualify quarterly with each weapon you want to carry. Good luck

Just a small example of the B.S. that goes on sometimes. We had a riot of 30 involved, one of our officers is in there mixing it up, gets hit with a chair and is knocked out cold. Transferred to hospital and recovers. DA says no new charges will be filed on the detainee, the reason is because its part of the job. There's probably more political reasons involved but that is still no excuse for not filing. Also co-worker just got gassed, no charges filed yet. It happens all the time everywhere. Just the way it is but I wouldnt want to do anything else.

No offense, you must have sometime in, since you talk like an inmate. It is true, some of the jobs are easy and some are hard. Just like every job out there. Every job has its ups and downs. Calling us names and talkin bad about us isn't cool. The public already doesn't like us. So why are you giving them more fuel for there arguement.

I wasn't looking for one either. My applogizes if I came of that way. Just tired of this state screwing with us yet the inmates are treated like royality. Maybe someday the tides will turn back our way. We will enjoy our jobs again.
