How about a good off duty holster for whatever he is gonna be carrying. The new Surefire 6PX LED lights are very nice and not that expensive. I put one on my AR and it holds up well to shooting, so I'm sure carrying it on a belt would be a nonissue for many, many years. If you do get him a light, do him a favor and order a bunch of 123 batteries to go with it.

The office will provide the thomas guides etc. Knives and flashlights are great. For the boots, I have had my Danners for 6 years and only re-soled em once. A good LED light would be great, thats what I got and used It all the time. Especially a smaller one. Or a big one like the pelican. There is no such thing as too many lights or knives in LE.

Second would be a good Surefire flashlight. There are also great CVC and PC apps for the I-phone.
Exactly what I have bought for friends who have graduated. Great gift and something that could very well save his life and even if it doesn't, he will at least use it frequently.

Surefire Light is a great gift. Something 150 lumen or above. Screw stuff like map books, waterproof pens, peace officer code books, and all that other junk,,,,the department will provide stuff. Get him something really usable like a high quality folding blade knife, flashlight, or uniform shop gift certificate.

A gift card for the uniform store in your area is great.

He'll soon learn all the random stuff he 'needs' but doesn't have. Surefire flash lights, knives, moisture wicking socks/t-shirts, QwikCodes,...all come to mind.

Can anyone recommend a good police supply store in the San Jose area?

That's exactly what I bought for my brother when he graduated from the CHP academy. I had his last name and badge # engraved on it.

+1,000,000...saved my *** on several occasions. Also a flashlight, not endorsing any one product (because I don't even have one) but some guys on nights have been real happy with the smaller 511 light. 90 sec recharge seems like a good thing.
