    CHP Academy Graduation Gift

A buddy of mine is graduating the CHP Academy at the end of this month and I wanted to get him something. Can any of you LEO's recommend something that might make a good gift that he might be able to use on duty?

    Surefire flashlight?
    Montblanc pen for writing reports?
    etc..?

    Thanks

Flashlights are always handy. Another good idea is the Califonia Peace Officers Legal Sourcebook.

If he does not know how to touch type, get him a computer program so that he can learn. Reports are generated on computers and one finger typing takes a long time. The faster and more concise his reports the happier his FTO will be.

A good folding knife would work.

He's a good typist, so no worries there.

When I did ride alongs, those Thomas Guides were life savers.

I noticed the primary tool I use once I graduated is a backup flashlight. He's definitely going to work nights in SJ. I use a Streamlight Stinger LED. I wear it on my belt.

Another thing you could get is a gift certificate for some boots. I'm going on my third set pretty soon.

Lastly, money for a backup weapon! Cannot stress this enough that once these guys graduate, carry off duty.

Yeah he's already super stoked about being able to CCW, I think he's already picked out his off duty CCW weapon.

When my nephew graduated back in 2002, I bought him a flashlight. You also might think about and clipboard, mapbook or maybe even a patrol bag if you know which kind they like.

Not sure on his policies and procedures, but one thing that most Deputies out here use on pretty much every stop is an Olympus digital voice recorder...

This is a great suggestion. As a watch commander, I was able to tell complaining parties that there complaint had no merit when the deputy was able to provide me with a recording of ther incident.

Thomas guides are a lifesaver too. Especially when covering an area as large as some CHP stations do. A good folding knife or backup flashlight are good too.

do NOT get him an expensive pen. he'll lose it. other suggestions are always good. can never have too many flashlights and even having multiple expensive ones is justifiable.
