I bought my good friend a pair of Oakley sunglasses when he graduated from the CHP academy last year... he uses them daily!

A digital voice recorder would be an awesome gift. A solid, quality knife or a Surefire / Stinger LED light would be close seconds. If I was starting tomorrow those would be at the top of my wish list.

A good folding knife or a good compact flashlight are perfect. He'll use them and will appreciate it every time.

Get him a skirt, because CHP are pretty much meter maids with guns.

An engraved streamlight is always a great gift for a new copper. Have it engraved with his last name and employee number.

Expensive pens will get lost quickly and most reports are written in pencil.

a heads up on the voice recorder, pretty much state wide, chp pv's have mvrs(mobile video recording system) in them, and the new cars that are being released will have a better version of mvrs. mvrs basically acts like a voice recorder and on top of that it takes a live video stream. The thomas guide is a must for a new officer, a patrol bag they will have from the academy. A good knife is a must, as is a flash light because the ones have gotten beaten up from officer macias and sergeant gomez. Another good idea is a bail out bag, something to store extra magazines and supplies.

+1 an Emerson folder comes to my mind!

Second would be a good Surefire flashlight. There are also great CVC and PC apps for the I-phone.

Got a buddy of mine a $300 gift card to www.officerstore.com

I guess it came in handy because he used it after his first week of field training he purchased everything he needed that he saw vet officers using.

Gift cards would be better IMO.

Or a couple pairs of ASP cuffs (I'm a fan of the hinged).
