High capacity mags?

As far as I know, there is nothing illegal about using or having a high capacity magazine at a range unless it is put on a firearm which is not a registered a-salt weapon. If the firearm was registered as an a-salt weapon, then there should not be a problem. I think you do have to get permission from the property owner, but that should not be an issue at the range unless they have rules saying otherwise.
So, I am still confused as to what they actually did to get arrested since so far I have heard nothing to indicate an illegal act. If that is the case, those people need to get a better attorney who knows firearms laws.Kemasa.

So... many... questions...
"Using a high capacity magazine" (provided it's in a legally configured rifle) is not a crime. What got him in trouble was that he was using a high capacity mag at the local range...
Well, which is it? Was he using a high capacity magazine in a bullet button equipped rifle or not?...bullet button or not.
Registered assault weapon? From what I was told, everything else they did were by the book (weapons registered and safely transported, rented a lane at the range, and followed range rules).
What was your friend arrested for? What was he charged with?Last edited by SarcoBlaster; 03-04-2011, 4:44 PM.Comment

Putting a magazine lock on a RAW and using high capacity magazines is not a crime either, just a bit silly. A RAW can use high capacity magazines, magazine lock or not.Kemasa.

I thought any center fire rifle with a non-detachable magazine had to be 10 rounds or less and didn't know RAW's were exempt. Thanks for the clarification and I've removed that question from my post.Comment

Sounds like your co-workers buddy was either an idiot or breaking the law in some other way. This is a true story. My co-worker and his buddies went to one of the local ranges a few weeks back. One of his buddies used a 30 round clip on his AR for target practice. I'm not too sure if he was shooting in spurts or not, but the range called the cops on him. The cops waited in the parking lot and arrested him on the spot. Last I heard, he was talking to his lawyer to see if he can reduce it from a felony to a misdemeanor. Moral of the story: Don't be a dumb ***, unless you want to lose your shooting rights.
I have some AR15 rifles and LOTS of 30 round magazines. I legally use them at the range whenever I damn well please.
I pity the fool who is stupid enough to try and arrest someone for a law they do not understand!

The reason for the 10-round limit is that it creates an 'assault weapon' - which a RAW, Registered Assault Weapon, already is.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

There isn't enough info to say whether he is guilty. We don't know what he was arrested for or charged with. For all we know the cops asked him where he got the magazine and the accused blurted out he bought it while on vacation out of state and brougt in bad to Cali. If so he is guilty of unlawfully importing? If he said he assembled the mag from a parts kit he just bought on line, it's illegal manufacture. The OP said he may have been firing "in spurts". doe that mean it was converted to full automatic?Comment

Long gun intrafamilial transfer is "hand it to them and say Happy Birthday"
Handguns require the $19 and the OpLaw form.
I honestly don't know if the DOJ will accept a handgun OpLaw when the transferee is under 18.- Rich

Long guns are not registered in California.
If the cops arrested him and he's attempting to get the charges reduced, it would have to have been for felony possession of an unregistered assault weapon. He either had a featured AK that did not have a mag lock, or he was using a high cap in a maglocked weapon. Same penalties for both.
If the guns being "registered" refers to them being registered assault weapons, then the use of the high cap without a mag lock was 100% legal and he has the wrong attorney if he is attempting to bring it down to a misdo.
Charges should be dismissed.
Do you happen to know what PC he was charged with?- Rich

I call FUD on this

Sorry...it comes off as a tall tale.
Long guns aren't required to be registered.
It is not illegal to use, own or possess high capacity magazines.
"If" the weapon was already registered as you say it was, then it's a legal Registered Assault Weapon already and he can run any magazines he desires.
So far we have FUD.
Got any FACTS..?..spit them out.

Yeah, even if he got popped for importing or manufacturing a large capacity magazine, that is only a misdemeanor. It may have been registered as an AW and later converted to full automatic. That or he lied about it being a RAW.Comment

It does not add up, so there is clearly something missing to the story.Kemasa.

The story does not include what the person was charged with. Waiting in the parking lot seems a bit strange too. So, even if everything is accurate, it is not complete.Kemasa.
