+1 on technique and area of impact for ASP efficiency. I've used mine numerous times and if you deploy it to the shins, collarbone or wrists, it's just great. Start whompin' on solid muscle and you're not going to get the results you want.

I hit a big guy 3 good shots with the ASP on his lower shin bone and he went down howling. I'm a believer! Stay safe!

We are issued the ASP but I spent $10 on a LAPD 26" hardwood stick and carry that religiously.

I was issued a PR24 when they first came out. I believe it was plastic. They switched to aluminum when they had incidents of the plastic ones breaking IIRC.

That was the only baton that I carried and I carried it; I didn't leave it in my car like a lot of guys I knew did. IMO, you might as well leave it in your locker if you didn't carry it with you in patrol. I never had to use it on anyone, but I did use it. When I would go to a 459 call of a business, I would usually find a broken window or glass door.

Rather than being guillotined from a large piece of glass hanging from the top of the window frame as I stepped over the threshold, I would use my baton to knock down the glass first.

That is why when I retired, the baton, which had been black when issued, was mostly "silver" in color when I turned in my equipment.

I've used it on an individual and after the second strike to the Zone A area, the ASP baton collasped on me. Although, the ASP baton does serve as a visual deterrence.

One summer, 2 other officers and I responded to a 211 at a local Walgreens. Further information was that a weapon was NOT actually seen by the reportee / victim. Subject was last seen leaving the area and was heading towards my direction of travel. Myself and arriving officers took on the subject with firearms drawn. We trianglated on the suspect and several commands were given for the suspect to show us his hands, but to no compliance. Suspect kept taunting us to "go ahead and shoot" him, claiming that he did not have a weapon.

Since my two other beat partners had him at gun point, I reholstered, and drew my ASP baton. No sooner after expanding my ASP baton, bad guy drops to his knees with hands in the air and yelling, "ok ok ok..." without further incident.

Now that's what I call, "Expandable Persuasion"!!!! LOL! "CD 4, 1 IC".
