    ASP Baton Experience

I have been carrying an ASP for years and mostly use it to bust out windows. I have only used it on a human two times in the past 16 years carrying it. I had to hit a guy several times with it the other day and it was largely inaffective. I am going to break down and start carrying a Tazer.

Anyone else use the APS notice how it does not work well on people?? Unless you hit them in the head of course, but that would be against dept. gen orders.

No offence intended, but were you hitting him with enough force? I do not nearly have the amount of experience that you do, but the one time I had to use it on a human it worked like a charm. I think it also depends on where you strike also. But like you stated, carrying a Tazer is a good alternative. I strictly carry my baton for for windows and company policy compliance.

I am not a LEO, but I do have some experience with ASP while I was in Philippine. There were times when I had to defend myself from local Filipinos who wanted to steal money from me and I was outnumbered. I have also noticed when individual adrenaline kicks in, they really do not feel the pain of ASP when you hit them in the soft or fat area. Instead of hitting them on the soft spot, I will hit them on the forearm and knee cap area because they will feel pain for sure when you hit those area. In addition, its hard to fight back when person's kneecap or forearm is broken from the impact of ASP. I am sure police officers do not like hitting people or suspect in the head with ASP because of department issue and stuff. Stay safe out there guys and thank you for your service.

I have yet to deploy mine (hope I don't have to). I still prefer hands on, especially with all the gray area regarding the taser right now... I carry the big fat one...The name fails to come to mind right now...

I use my ASP all the time....works get to retrieve items that roll under the patrol car, or to flip the dead cat out of the road....

The ASP are thin. I carry the one from Winchester/Peacekeeper know as the RCB. It is thick, heavy and has a larger stricking head/tip

I know personally of one case where solid, side of the knee, strikes with an ASP ended the fracas quickly. I know of others where it was less effective. Seems to come down to weight and technique. Heavier, such as the RCB noted above, just might be a little better, but I think good technique is going to mean even more.

My dept used to carry the good ole PR-24's and switched to the Monadnock Expandable baton about 6 years ago, as an instructor for both I prefer the PR-24. The MEB is easier to carry but I felt more confident with the PR-24. I have had a lot of my guys express the same feelings about it in training.

Back in the day, I never got into the ASP. I was all about my wood baton. If I put it on you, it got your attention.

I've only hit people with an ASP twice but it worked great both times. Largely comes down to technique and area of impact. I still carry a Taser though, putting that red dot on someone is a very good compliance tool.

I haven't gotten the chance to use it on someone yet, but from what I've heard is that it is not very effective. Unless you're unusually strong or you hit them in the right spots (elbow, wrist, knee) they probably will just keep coming at you. A good alternative would be to carry a metal fixed pr24.

My old agency I carried a PR-24 expandable and was confident in it's use. The new placed carries the ASP because it "looks less intimidating" as the Chief put it. What a sell out. That's what you get with a fat guy sitting behind a desk day dreaming about his next City paid "workshop" in Tahoe or Reno.

Had my 26 in expandable mon. autolock since Oct...
only time it's been used was to search bushes for a thrown gun...
the one time I snapped it out in a fight... 3 deputies jumped the guy before I had to use it...
fine by me... I've been hurt enough going hands on.. that and after 25 years I'm ready to let someone else get hurt.. the baton/pepper etc... way better than broken me...

Used an asp for a number of years and found it largely ineffective, mostly against larger people.

I switched to a Peacekeeper and never looked back.
