Even the Feds put "POLICE" on their raid vests and jackets with the exception of the FBI. Marshals, ATF, ICE, etc., all do it. It's just more recognized. The Chinese police put "POLICE" on their vests too for the Olympics instead of their usual markings.

I might be wrong, but I thought security companies were supposed to mark their patrol vehicles and uniform patches with a word "security". I believe this was per BSIS. These guys are deffinetly a private company, same as ADT, Westec and all the other alarm response companies. I wonder how they get away with it.Comment

Even the Marshals Service and ICE are starting to put POLICE on their vests and raid jackets:

I've also seen ATF with POLICE, but I couldn't find a photo... seems like FBI are the only ones still rolling without... but then, they're the FBI.

If only that were true
that goes to show you that California is indeed two different states.[/QUOTE]
We had that type of setup here with the Ontario Airport Police who were called public safety an were cross trained as fire responders. They decided it wasn't working and went to police and fire separately. In SoCal, I don't think we have that type of setup anymore. If there are some in NorCal, that goes to show you that California is indeed two different states.Comment

A few years ago a friend of mine was pulled over by a security guard down in San Diego. He thought it was an actual police vehicle since it was late night and they only saw the front of the cruiser as they drove past the guy. The guy lit them up and initiated a vehicle stop, this was all in a public street, nowhere near private property. When the security guard walked up and started asking them questions he saw that it was a security guard. The funny part:
The ride he was in was an un-marked GOV carrying a strike team in full gear.
They ripped that guy a new one and I doubt that security guard had a job for much longer after that.Comment

As CSDGuy mentioned, Sunnyvale has a Fire/EMS/Police Public Safety Department. When they hire, they want people with previous LE experience and many applicants have previous EMS/Fire experience. Many departments in other states operate similarly, such as in Texas and BNA in Tennessee. We had that type of setup here with the Ontario Airport Police who were called public safety an were cross trained as fire responders. That's what I said. FBI doesn't do it, all the other agencies do it. Maybe my use of punctuation didn't separate it too clearly... I put FBI... period. Then I listed some other agencies that do it. I've seen them do it as early as the mid-90's and most likely way before but that's when I first saw the US Marshals with "POLICE" on their jackets and raid vests. In Waco, you see the ATF agents with their ATF/POLICE markings on the back of their vests. FBI is just special because everyone knows the Feebs, I guess.
I haven't seen it personally in CA, but I wouldn't be surprised if ABC or BNE puts "POLICE" on their gear too. Anyone know if this is a practice with them?Last edited by Notorious; 01-10-2011, 9:27 PM.I like guns

On the fire side, they generally have done a good job over the years of saving foundations rather than structures. That's why residents of Rohnert Park historically paid higher fire insurance premiums than comparably sized cities. The City of Rohnert Park has Public Safety Officer's. I believe there is at least one City in Northern Cali that does also. They work both Fire and Police on some type of rotating schedule. These are real cops who can cite you and take you to jail. And if you're on fire, they can put you out.

Rohnert Park and Sunnyvale were the first two full on "public safety" with melded PD and FD responsibilities in Norcal. As mentioned it was a concept du jour for a while but isn't that practical anymore (IMO) given the increased amount of specialization and training both roles require.

Same as Rohnert Park..my little bro works there. It's obvious they're the cops. I can't wait till they start hiring again so I can try and lateral.....Sunnyvale has a Department of Public Safety. They do Police/Fire/EMS. That department is organized with a Police Department and a Fire/EMS department. All DPS members are cross-trained as Police and Firefighters. They do serve in both roles.
However, their cars are "POLICE" emblazoned... not DPS.
