    LEOs' thoughts on bullet buttons?

    To Los Angeles area LEOs,

I know Sacramento and San Diego law enforcement have issued memos to officers instructing them on the legality of AR's equipped with a BB. I live in LA and would love to purchase one of said rifles but I am a total wimp. Until I can carry a print out of a similar memo issued by LAPD or LA Sheriffs I'm just too afraid to make the purchase. I'm concerned about an encounter with a LEO who is uninformed re the nuances of assault weapon laws being arrested as a result. I've settled for the CA legal Kel Tec SU 16 CA which is a not so fabulous alternative to an AR. I know the possibility is remote, but I just don't want to take the chance. Any thoughts?

Most gun shops now carry BB AR style rifles. If they were illegal, Turners would not carry them. Most LA area officers have been briefed about the rifles. I have not seen any "official" paperwork issued by any local department. My departmets armed unit have been briefed and we have passed around the Calguns flowchart. I have friends in LAPD, LASD, LAX PD, HUNT PARK PD, PASADENA PD, GLENDALE PD As well as other departments. Everyone has said the same thing when I brought up the subject, they were informed during briefing. Some have even been given the Calguns flowchart as well. If you feel uncomfortable building your own, just pay the extra money to buy a fully built rifle from a reputable local gun shop. You can feel more comfortable by knowing that you purchased a product that has already been reviewed by the BATF and the DOJ firearms Division inpectors. If they were illegal, you would not see Turners advertising them in their weekly flyer. enjoy and stop being paranoid.

I am not endorsing Turners, although their prices are pretty good. here is this weeks flyer with a Del Ton RIA 223 on sale for 799.00. Go to the Reseda store and pick it up. If I am not mistaken, someone correct me please, I believe Reseda is patrolled by LAPD.

It has been posted in the past by LASD members, that cadets are given this info while in the academy. Also, these same members have let their fellow deputies know about BB ARs/AKs pattern rifles at briefings.

I can't speak for LAPD, since I was also LASD and am now retired.

Thanks very much for the advice. Why is it so difficult for LAPD or LA Sherrifs to just issue a memo like San Diego and Sacramento? Clarification is beneficial to all stakeholders.

Anyone have the San Diego memo for print out?

I carry around the Calguns flow chart, but that can be confusing for some.

I never stop someone and ask "are there any illegal weapons in the car?" LOL

Please, don't break any traffic laws and you give us no excuse to stop you.

So as a LEO, have you been instructed that properly installed BBs are legal. If so, why is it so tough for LA agencies to issue a simple document for clarity, as did Sand Diego and Sacramento have. It's so frustrating. People go out of their way to abide by the law but the DOJ and decision makers in LA law enforcment play coy and hide the ball.

No instruction is needed when I own a CA compliant AR which I shoot frequently with my co-workers. I bring awareness to my partners, but not everyone is educated about it.

LA is a different playing field. Lot of officers to educate on the legalities of AWs. LAPD and LASO have thousands upon thousands of officers/deputies.

I think you need to stop listening to the tin hatters in other threads...BBs are nothing new to LEOs.

Go get yourself a nice Cal Legal AR15 and enjoy it.
