In my opinion I do not think physical fitness is that difficult at all. I think almost anyone can or should able to do the minimum requirement. If not, they need to hit the gym and run couple miles per week.Comment

thank you for the info. I really wanted to graduate from my college because I will be the only one in my family with college degree. It will make my parents very happy.Comment

HONORFIRST.COM is a good forum for patrol applicants. Right now they are looking at having two classes start each month of about 100 each until they hit about 3000. Good luck to all who take the test.Comment

You don't have to do it to get into the academy. You will be tested when you get there in the mile and half, the confidence course and the 220. I believe they also test in how many situps/pushups just as an indicator throughout and at the end as to where you are.
EDIT: I stand pre-corrected (checked my own intel...lol). I guess they have two PFTs now. The second one...you do have to pass a mile a half, 220 yd run, pushups and situps. I guess they are making sure you are really good to go nowadays.Last edited by meangreen46; 08-27-2010, 1:22 AM.Comment

I would be surprised if they have 100 people in each class. They typically only have 50 for adminstrative reasons. That is an excellent site for people looking for info.Comment

You need to be running at the very least 13 min mile and half BEFORE you get there. Anything better than that and you're ahead of the game. You also should be running 5 days a week....at least a few miles a day at minimum (3-5 miles is better). You will run every single day starting on day one when you get there. Keep in mind that the elevation and weather will kill you when you arrive. Some people can't adjust fast enough and go home. Keep in mind that you will be outside even if it's snowing.
The PT there is not joke. Even if you are a PT stud, they will make sure you are giving 110% the whole time. Most people who leave the academy understimated the PT. The curriculum is relatively easy if you take the time to study and enjoy looking at flashcards. I hear the academy is one of the harder academys for law enforcement. The good thing is they place a high level of importance on shooting skills. Therefore, they require more hours with guns than any other academy.Last edited by meangreen46; 08-27-2010, 1:30 AM.Comment

Good thing Marine Corps has made me strong than ever before. I am not a PT stud as Navy seals or so. However, I did pass the Marine Corps Scout & Sniper test. So I am hoping I will be in decent shape for CBP if I were to make it. At the same time, I never been to NM before and I am sure it is going to be lot different climate than CA.However, wherever I go, I am going to give all I got. I am hoping NM is not hotter than Iraq. After spending 18 months over there, I do not want to go anywhere where temperature goes over 130 lol. thanks for the infoYou need to be running at the very least 13 min mile and half BEFORE you get there. You'd be amazed then at some of the academy recruits I've seen over the years.
Not sure how the program is at the federal level these days, but casually hitting the gym and running a couple miles per week would not fully prepare you for the academy I went through.
Just sayin'.

You should be fine. Just stay in that shape and you won't have any problems. You have the right mentality.Good thing Marine Corps has made me strong than ever before. Good luck. I dropped 25 pounds in 13 weeks at Artesia. I was a fatty. Now I'm pudgy. Give it all you got. Yes you run in rain or snow. It's dry and there is a oil refinery next door. Yay the smell of oil while you run.
You can drink your sorrows and pain away at the coyote pub or under a red roof.
Stock up on Ibprofen. And hope that PT is the first thing of the dayPeace through superior firepower.

just want to say to say good luck to you guys and make sure you study for that pre-entrance exam! there is nothing worse then failing and having to wait a certain period of time before being allowed to take the exam again.
i went to academy at brunswick, ga and i must say that place already sounds better then nm. i couldnt imagine having to do pt outside when there is an oil refinery next door. although the bugs and the humidity of georgia did get to me after a while.Comment

Artesia NM is the armpit of America. The diesel refinery next door was only the beginning. Try the cow crap farm to the north and the Pecan tree farms all over the place. Yeah....it smells there....and you kinda get used to it. But when you're trying to run the perimiter and take a deep breathe..it's like eating chocolate and running at the same time.just want to say to say good luck to you guys and make sure you study for that pre-entrance exam! there is nothing worse then failing and having to wait a certain period of time before being allowed to take the exam again.

Oh yeah...the locals don't like the trainees. It's a love/hate relationship. They love that you're there giving them money, but they hate that you are "ruining" there little town. My advice to anybody going to Artesia anytime soon is to stay on base as much as possible. When you go out for a much needed day off on the weekend, don't cause trouble and don't hook up. It has been done and there are plenty of Artesia/BP babies running around.Comment
