Depends on the agency. FOr mine, we get 50 rounds for "training" a month. Its FMJ stuff. Ammo for duty is supplied at no cost to us. If you take your duty gun home, then you can take the rounds in it. We can't use any ammo that is not approved/issued by the department.

Some agencies allow it, others do not. Either way, police officers very commonly get free ammo.... by the book, or off the book...

The range master for a certain LE group just gave a buddy of mine a case of .40 caliber for his retirement... all labeled "Law Enforcement only".

As long as I am at the department range, shooting a duty/hideout gun the ammo is provided. During certain periods the frequency of such training may be limited. I do not get free ammo to shoot at an offsite range or normal plinking.
        2- for duty?
I am provided all the ammunition I need for Duty use. If I run out of ammo, they will bring me more.
        3- take home?
I can bring all 37 rounds of duty ammo home if I want.
4- Also can you use your own ammo for duty?
No, I must use departmentally provided ammo in all of my duty guns, even personally owned duty guns. I would be out of policy if I bought the same ammo and carried it in place of, or to supplement my duty ammo.

Understanding that the "free" ammo is paid for by our tax dollars......

Duty ammo was issued everywhere I worked. We would get fresh ammo annually and shoot the old off for training.

Training ammo otherwise was FMJ reloads in semi-autos, and either wadcutter or semi-wadcutter reloads back in the day for revolvers. My preference was to semi-wadcutters as you can run speedloaders with those. If we wanted to shoot more we could and the agency would provide us with all the reloads we wanted, but it's not like that any more that I know of because of budgets. Most guys I know are drawing only the amount of agency provided training ammo required for the given training evolution. Anything beyond that is out of their own pockets.

Back in the day we used to get .38 reloads for $90 per 1000 with brass exchange. Made it pretty easy to get plenty of practice.

We get 100 rounds of pistol a month if we want and it's in stock at the department range. Sometimes it's not for months if you shoot 45. Sometime they have buckshot. We buy our own duty and practice ammo for rifles.

Pistol and shotgun rounds duty ammo is provided. Usually replaced once a year.

You have to shoot department ammo at the dept range. But you can take it home a bring it back.

We can use own own ammo as long it's the same as the department uses.

It depends on ones department policy. Where I use to work the rangemaster would routinely issue officers all the ammo they wanted to practice either at home or at the department range. Believe it or not surprisingly few officers took advantage of this situation. Newer officers tend to practice more than veteran officers. It seemed to me that after a year or two on the job most (or many) officers lose interest in practicing their shooting skills other than what is required by the department. JMHO. When I was on the SWAT team I use to shoot once a week, every week of the year.

Ammo that is used on duty must be approved by the department (its a liability thing). You can carry and use anything you want off duty.

I got all I wanted. My old agency supported people shooting off duty at a range. All of it was duty ammo too. Few people took advantage of it though. Now that I think about it ....it was only me!

there was a time when i cold shoot all the ammo i wanted because no one ever practiced and the department provided reloads for practice...this was back in the days of revolvers. we could even take some home (a couple of bags; 100rds) to practice at another range.

then they began restricting use of departmental ammo to the departemntal range...i think this happened at the same time as the change qualification and training with duty ammo (liability issue). this also ended the taking home of ammo...besides a handful of rounds you might have left over after quals.

all issued ammo is now restricted to training/qualification use, but you could get approved for ammo for a training class (up to 1500 rounds). we rotated our duty ammo at each qualification period...shoot it and get issued more...they also provide off-duty ammo. surprisingly we didn't have a reg about carrying issued ammo for either duty or off-duty. when they issued 147gr subsonic 9mm, i chose to carry a 115gr JHP instead...i went back to issue anno when they changed over to the 127gr +P+ loading

I currently work for a department that gives its sworn staff a case and 4 loose boxes of 1400 rds of federal hydo shock JHP ammo a year minus the box of ammo when we qualify for our on duty weapon (which the department also provides). Its the responsibility of the sworn staff to remain proficient with its on and off duty/personel weapon.

I think it depends on the size of your department also. With my old department of 10,000 officers the only ammo they gave you was 30 rounds to qualify with every other month, duty ammo twice a year of 40 rounds ( this was the only type of ammo we could carry, but you you could buy more) and training ammo assigned to your division. To give that many officers ammo whenever they wanted, in either 9mm, 40, 45, 12 gauge or 5.56 would bankrupt the department!

I can see the issue of using your own ammo for duty. If an officer were to shoot a poor criminal the fact that the officer used his own loads would somehow come up in court, I sure hope not but one can expect anything from dirtbags these days.

We get "free" ammo from the firearms dept - just have to ask. Last time they gave me a couple hundred rounds, targets, etc etc
We are not able to use our own personal ammo for duty carry

We get free duty ammo. Only enough to stock our duty weapon and extra magazines. We get one free box of ammo for qualification. Practice rounds are not free. $15.00 per box of .40 cal.
