My advise is to just move on from LASO and try a different dept. Where do you live? Here are a few cites I'd recommend to get a start at.

    1. Vernon. Small dept with a lot of money due to the heavy industry within the city limits. They have a high turnover due to guys getting their start there and moving on. (this means they hire a lot of new guys) I have two academy classmates who work there and they love it.

    2. Long Beach. Lots of good officers come from there. They do things a bit different there but overall a good start. I have a friend in investigations there.

    3. Garden Grove. They hired a self sponsored recruit during my class and they back paid him for all of his expenses from the start of our class. This included all equipment, books, ammo etc.
To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

Do you think the high turnover can be attributed with extremely poor morale? A top brass at LASD who is also the mayor of a nearby city tells me the police dept. in Vernon and even Cudahy, Maywood, and Bell all have horrible retention rates. I don't know from personal experience but from what I hear and newspaper articles, the good ol' boys network and code of silence still runs quite rampant in these small police depts., thats why many are turned off by it and end up leaving in a year or two. Do you think that is true or has relevance? Cuz their retention numbers are quite appalling, esp for such a small police dept. I read that Cudahy and Maywood are in the process of getting court-mandated federal oversight because of how many problems occur.

If that was the case, probably be better for the OP to hit up other agencies first. I know for sure Long Beach is a really good department. I know a detective over there. Very professional and very happy with his job. Also I would think alot of cities in Orange County who arent as affected by the economy, budget cuts, etc. might be good to look there. But it doesn't look promising...if you were to look at the additional federal grants given to local police depts to hire new officers, almost every dept can barely squeeze 2 or 3 more officers into their budget.

This is how BAD INFO gets out there. People talking when they shouldn't.

I know for sure Long Beach is a really good department.

They've had their ups and downs over the years too. I remember vividly LASD patrolling parts of the city because of problems within the PD. I WAS THERE. They are losing a really good chief who changed their department a lot, but they are looking at financial issues too. Hope they can keep going in the right direction,

Stick to first hand experience. If you're not a LEO, you really shouldn't be answering questions from non-LEOs directed at LEOS, especially since the info you provide has questionable accuracy.

It doesn't matter who your daddy is, you're not getting the whole story from him. It wouldn't be practical, or ethical, for him to be giving you inside info.

I didn't mean to trash any specific dept. That's not my goal or intention. I love cops, but if thats the less than ideal information that is out there in newspapers, investigative reports, officials higher ranking than my father stating this, reports that grade police depts, community reports, etc. I would tend to think it has a bit of truth to it. That's why I was asking if he knew this to be true or not. If it was just your normal LE trashtalk and shooting the sh*t around the table, I would know it to be just gossip. But there's more to it than that, there are facts and numbers that would lend one to draw a different conclusion...including even the thread earlier stating how extremely high turnover rate. You know and I know thats not normal in any agency, whether police dept or regular business, for people to come in and take off so fast.

Something might not be right. My only goal was that if the OP is going to start looking at other agencies, maybe that is something he can check into or investigate himself. If definitely wouldn't hurt. I'm sure if you were to do LE all over again, those are some factors you might look into before joining again, i.e. how professional the dept is, what their statistics and numbers are, how morale is, climbing the ladder opportunities, how the community views the dept., how they are graded amongst their peers and LE community, how well they get along with people, etc. I know that is something, including many in my own family, who if they did not join LASD and joined a regular police dept., they would for sure check into those things before applying.

Everyone would agree, whether a LEO or not, that the OP would have the best of luck in finding a great LE job somewhere where he was happy enough to want to stay in one dept and advance his whole career, rather than working in place he ended up not liking and wanting to leave...that wouldnt be good. That was what I was trying to get at.

LASD is a great place to work. Good benefits, lots of opportunity with courts, jails, admin spots, patrol, specialized units, etc. Hiring has really slowed alot. They have hundreds on the hire list, hundreds taking the test when it is offered, etc. Right now, unless you are lucky, hope your a FOS(friend of sheriff) to get into a class based on the slowdown. If the LA Co Police/ LASD merger happens, they will be running more classes to fill that 50% vacency rate that LA Co. Police have right now...

Don't worry, your just not in the top canidates, now two years ago you prob would have been hired. Either appeal it or just keep trying. Don't give UP!

I don't ever plan on giving up, i'm still trying to get a hold of my BI, but no luck, I've been looking into local city agencies and they all seem to be in the same boat as LASD, just not enough openings, im going to start looking into OCSD, and other Orange County departments, and Dirtbiker, i'll definitely look into those departments, question though, how would a lateral transfer from a small department to LASD work, would i still need to go through their Academy?

On transferring out of other agencies, it depends on the amount of time you have and what level of POST certificate you have attained.

For example, if you don't have 2 years and your POST basic cert both Long Beach and LAPD will make you retake their academy. I'm pretty LASO is fine with any POST approved academy.

You are young so you have some time. Best you do your research, go on ride-alongs, and talk to officers. In my opinion the best dept is the one whos command structure backs it officers and supports them both on/off duty. Who knows maybe the small dept you start with will be the one you spend 30 years with.

That may be very possible, but i had really did have my heart set on eventually becoming a DT instructor for the LASD, so until I find its absolutely impossible i'm going to keep trying for that

BIs are a very busy bunch and are nary impossible to contact. In fact they will duck nearly every opportunity to speak with you. Don't feel bad if you can't get him... I could never get my OCSD BI on the phone after I got the same letter.

Have you tried sending the BI an email asking him what you were rejected for? I would want to know what I was dealing with before I filed any type of appeal. You never know which goofy thing some friend of a friend told the BI and how that made you look. Some things that you may have done as a juvenile may DQ you depending on the circumstances.

He said that no one was going to hold what I did when I was 13 against me unless it was really bad, and it wasn't anything too serious, i'll try sending him an email as well but i would think that a phone call would be the best route.
