Bizarre how many people complain about the freeloaders in society but won?t complete a simple civic duty.

I was asking because when you're working as LE you're exempted-which you should be. Otherwise you could be asked to serve on a jury for your own case! Once retired it would make sense to me that you should still be exempted but you're not. Just seems like a waste of time for everyone since the defense is still going to excuse you.

My apologies. Didn’t notice which forum this was.

        Carry on.

My entire LE career was to serve and to put as many bad people in jail as possible. The was the goal every single night. I?m so done with the criminal justice system and working off the clock for a few hours and without being paid while “serving” the community. Every cop gives a tremendous amount of “pro bono policing” each year (because a watch commander won’t approve overtime on a late arrest or report). Besides, I think pretty much everyone is “guilty” if they got arrested these days and no defense attorney would want me on a jury. The last thing I want to do now is sit in a jury box with 11 strangers, when I can be fishing in the sierras 7 days per week.

That?s not how it works. We chose this field. It doesn?t entitle us to avoid basic civic duty, regardless of our feelings about the criminal justice system.

Yes we choose this field. I chose to be a civil servant for 34 years. I’m done. Go sit in in a California court for me would ya, because I really don’t care about “civil” duty in this state any longer. Civility in the California criminal Justice system checked out a long time ago, just L@@K around you.

So I assume you think everyone should skip jury duty? Or just cops?

The 3 times that I served on juries I felt that we did the right thing and I was happy with the decision that we came up with. I believe that everyone should serve on a jury, I also think that I've done more than my share of jury duty.

I really don’t care. Cali juries are lame anyways. Again, look around you.

***Note to you: Legally, cops are already exempted from serving on jury duty in California.

I know we are exempt. I?ve been on the job 25 years. We aren?t exempt in retirement. I guess you are ok with the hypocrisy of your position.

Is having symptoms of Covid still a valid reason for denial?

Jury Duty is freeloading off our time. Not to mention our current Justice system and administration is a joke anyway.

It seems that only If you decide to involve yourself with the jury duty process, then it could be called a waste of (freeloading) your time. Having been called and served on a bunch of actual juries, I found the process to be a bit scary, but enlightening. I do think IF someone can do this without financial hardship, it is an eye opener. It is wild sitting down with 11 other people who decided to involve themselves, and who have different understanding capacities, different attention spans, and different reasons for being there, to come to an agreement on the evidence presented. (that is the crux, the evidence presented, not necessarily justice). Don't do it, do it if you can, (a wild education opportunity, it will change you) but best to view it from the outside, rather than as a defendant!

The only time I was set up on the jury section was over 30 years ago, and the lawyer for the drunk driving guy used his first preempting challenge to get rid of me right now because I believed & I trusted chemical testing equipment for air supplied in chemical atmospheres. The next time I was called the DA and the lawyer for the accused made a deal and we were dismissed. Soooooo I was willing but.

Been called twice, once in CA, once after I moved.
I have put enough people in the defendant seat to know what hoops you need to jump through before the DA will sit them there. Live line ups, photo six packs signed by the victs and wits, evid, etc. I sat in San Fernando court for 3 hot summer days watching the clerk call out the numbers of those to be interviewed as prospective jurors, watching as each number called resulted in each prospect checking their number again and again, knowing the two defts seated there were refusing a plea deal which was the cause of us wasting our time. After lunch break on the third day the defts pled out and we were excused.
