I received a jury summons every year of the 27yrs I was in LE and a couple of times before I was hired. The 2 or 3 times I went thru voir dire it was before the same PD. He excused me each time. A few years before he appeared in Muni court in Whittier where I lived. During a court break with only me still in the courtroom he asked me if I had a case. I said no I was in law school and wanted to observe courtroom procedure. A year or so later I was in Superior Court and he had transferred there. He remembered me and asked if I was still in school. When I said no he asked the usual do you know someone LE and I said yes me. Gone! That happened twice over the next two years. Then I had a Capt. who told us to take the LE exemption which I did over my career.

I received a subpoena the same year I retired but took the medical exemption due to my back. Can't sit in those chairs for even an hour.

The answer to Jury Duty is simple. Tell them that you don't believe that you can get justice in America. I learned that from a former California Superior Court Judge neighbor. I've never served on a jury, retired military and a Federal Marshal.

Refuse to swear the juror oath. When the judge asks you if you willing to "affirm", go ahead and agree, but it won't matter. You will be considered a trouble maker and will be excused by the prosecution.

I know we are exempt. I?ve been on the job 25 years. We aren?t exempt in retirement. I guess you are ok with the hypocrisy of your position.

Gee, you sound like a dedicated public servant...so do you think it's not a waste of time to sit and wait to be called, when if you're called no defense atty would ever allow you on their jury? You may be dedicated, but you're not displaying any common sense.

I would be fine with thinking it to be a duty, if it were that judges and jury supervisors in the court system would be compelled to take a few days off of their work without any pay, and perform some other "civic duty" on demand.

Yup, the Cali legal system is B R O K E N. And I don’t care for it any longer. I stopped caring when I realized that the majority of ignorant Cali voters overwhelmingly vote democrat.

My civic duty is to pay my taxes and not commit a crime. That’s it. If summoned for jury duty, I’ll show up. However I’m getting out of it by telling the court my thoughts. “…everyone arrested is guilty. Period.”

I'm not retired and I mark the LE exemption on my jury notices.

If I were retired, I guess I wouldn't mind doing jury service; but, here's the thing, I truly believe that I would struggle to not be biased. When you deal with criminals for a living, one's worldview can often become cynical. The mindset of "he's probably guilty" is hard to overcome for people who directly deal with guilty people all day for years.

If we're being honest, that's not fair for the defendant.

My sentiments exactly. I live in L.A. County, so I consider our criminal justice system here a total failure, and I refuse to waste my time with any jury duty dog and pony show until they fix the broken system.

Do you not realize that there are two types of jury trials, one criminal, the other civil.

Both need good jurors.

Well I showed up today as they kept sending jury duty summons. As expected a waste of time. After waiting 2 1/2 hours downstairs then up to the courtroom. With the initial Judge run screening-overview of case and it's a homicide. Then put up the names of defense attorneys/witnesses and list of prosecution/witnesses. "Does anyone know any of the people involved?" "Yes your Honor, I retired from the Sheriff's Department and last worked in Cold Case Homcide so I've worked with most of the people testifying for the prosecution." "That will be an excusal." Why do they even bother?

Haven’t got one yet, since we’ve been in AZ my wife has got one didn’t have to appear.

I would do my civil duty and go if summoned too, but I would also be honest and say if he was arrested and charged with the crime I’d lean very heavily toward the prosecution. If a civil case and they are asking for a large settlement I’ll vote no everytime.
