As Eat Dirt said, 29 days in Loma Linda Hospital. I went in the outpatient surgery center on May 10 and was supposed to stay overnight and go home on the 11th. As everyone knows, it didn't happen. All I know, between back to back back surgeries and extreme nerve pain, I told my wife it was the most horrific experience of my life. I had no idea it would get much worse in a week when they told me I had peripheral neuropathy and would have to learn to walk again.

The PT therapists were all outstanding. I did what they asked of me because I figured they knew I could do it. I will admit there was a period I thought I'd be in a walker for the rest of my life and I've never been that negative after an ortho surgery. What changed it was Michael, one of my therapists. He told me to step up to the 10' long parallel bars deck and walk. I looked at him like he was crazy and said I can't walk, you know that. He told me based on what he had seen me do over several days, he knew I could. He told me to put my hands above the bars (they aren't gymnastic style, they are much lower), but not touch them and walk. I ACTUALLY WALKED!! I did it 3 more times and then he had me return to the mat. Eventually with his holding me around the hips from behind, I walked around the gym twice. He had a very light touch on me the whole time. I know that doesn't sound like much to all of you who just get up and walk, but it was a big deal to me and to him.

I began outpatient PT today with some exercises in the gym and then in the pool. I know I still have a ways to go to get normal again (I'm referring to walking before someone gets smart), but I will. It was actually harder to get my trunks off, dry myself and then get dressed. I'm going to ask if that can be counted as therapy because I was exhausted.

I want to thank ED and Ron-Solo for keeping everyone up to date. The best thing I have going is I'm home and the support of my family, especially my wife of 38 years today. Yes, today is our 38th Anniversary. Our youngest daughter is going to cook us dinner and we will celebrate it at home. Not what I had planned on (I had to cancel the Cirque du Soleil, but no biggie), but this will be better and quieter.

Thank you all and as I have major improvements, I'll give an update. Ultimately, I will let everyone know I can walk and it will all be in capitals.

First, thanks everyone on the Happy Anniversary wishes, much appreciated and thank you for the thoughtful comments. Second, LMan, I'm guessing it will be closed thru the summer due to the high fire situation during that period. I hope by the time it opens, I'm no longer in need of my walker to get around, because I might have a slight problem managing the terrain there.

All of you active leos be safe. I know you'll have your head on a swivel, especially after the loss of one of our deputies last week. Take care all.
