We are issued S&W 4566 TSW's. Gun works fine, but if I had a choice, it would definitely be the Sig P220R. I have a P226R now and that gun is a perfect mate for my hand. I carry a S&W 340PD as a BUG. Every Deputy is issued an Armalite AR and Remy 870. I wish my Department was forward thinking enough to allow us to use personal AR's or purchase our own handguns. But as it stands now, we can't even attach lights to our AR's, its against policy.

We're issued the S&W M&P 40. Good gun.
I used to carry a Glock 21, but now carry a Dave Berryhill customized Kimber 5".
I plan to switch back to my Glock 21 as soon as it comes back from Robar. Lighter weight, just as accurate and higher mag cap. Can't beat it.Comment

LAPD stopped issuing the berreta 92 and now issues the Glock 22. Glocks are cool as are Hks, Sigs etc, but does anyone else have an issue when an American police department forces (issues) foreign guns?
I mean it would be like U.S. police departments having foreign police cars.
Is it that the Unites States just doesnt produce a decent police issue gun?
Or am I just being silly?Originally posted by 11Z50Since your myopic view is in concurrence with your cognizant lifespan on this planet, obviously less than 20 years, I will grant you a dispensation.

Before I retired approx. four years ago we went from the Sig P226 9mm to your choice of a Sig P226 40 or a Glock 40 I chose the Sig. The Sig was issued with night sights and a SF flashlight. When I retired I turned it in and at my retirement dinner the Chief presented it to me. I also was able to purchase ($300.00) my Sig 9mm when we converted to the 40s. The Sig 9mm has a special place in my heart. It was issued new in the box in 1990. In 1994 good training and that gun saved my life.
After the Hollywood shootout we went from shotgun to the Ruger 9mm rifle. I would have preferred to stay with the shotgun.
We also carried Tasers.Comment

Issued a Glock 17 for duty carry with no option to carry anything else.
We can carry anything O/D as long as we are qualified with it. I usually carry a Glock 26 though I have a SW 642 that I occasionally carry when it's warm.
I have a Colt Officer's Model that I should be getting back from Robar any day now. I anticipate that it will be come my primary O/D carry.Comment

Yeah, S&W stopped making these guns, but they made them for us upon our request. The Picatinny rail is machined into the dust cover as opposed to the old style which was a bolt on rail. All of the spare parts we had for our 4506 and 4506-1's are exactly the same as the 4566-TSW, which was a big deciding factor for my Department. We wanted either USP's or Sig's, but that was shot down. We even worked out a deal with H&K to get USP's and USP Compacts in a package deal for cheaper than the S&W's, but the Department's upper echelon is fixated on S&W for some reason. Most everyone else was in line for the H&K or Sig, but obviously our concerns were disregarded.
Everyone is issued and required to use the Department issued .45 caliber 4566-TSW, no exceptions. Prior to the beginning of 2008, the only authorized off duty gun was an issued S&W CS45. Which is like carrying a mini anchor. I think my full size Sig conceals better. The idea of being issued an off duty carry gun is a nice thought, but in practice it really was ridiculous. Currently we can carry just about anything we want off duty as long as we qualify with it and it's on the books with the Department and has passed an armourers inspection.Comment

How does that work, when on duty you can take off your bullet buttons and use hi-cap mags, but when you go home you have to convert it back to CA legal; or do they just stay in the patrol cars at all times?we only have 38 Colt le6920's that the department owns, the rest are owned individually by the officers. Approved for Duty rifles in our department are the le6920, le6940, lmt in the same configuation and the Sig556
My personal rifle in the car is a le6920, LaRue tactical 7.0 handguards, brownells rotary rear fold down, Aimpoint m4s, ctr stock, miad grip, and insight procyon light.Comment

Officers with department permission can purchase and register brand new assault weapons. They are retained by the Officer forever as they are personal property.Comment
