I was a police officer for 9 years and moved on to bigger and better things. I strongly believe in Constitutional Carry and national reciprocity. As far as informing LE, I always inform LE, but do not think it should be a requirement, especially in California where there are so many easy gun free zones that people may not know...

I had to show proof of training to get my Oregon CHL initially but after that it was up to me, pretty much just wrote a check and informed the county if I moved between counties.

That is why an exemption to the GFSZA and local statues/ordinances must be included. There is no reason for an already authorized to carry individual should be barred from carrying anywhere with exception to courts, jails, and locations of CJ nature.

Many of the statues and ordinances do not exempt even off-duty, retirees, or LTC holders. If you formally read some of these laws, the "in the performance of their duties" line is attached to the exemptions, so technically, even active, on-duty officers are not exempt if they are not there on a call or on official business.

Can't go support the local school's fundraiser during Code 7; not an officiate officially there on official business.

Well every permit I have ever seen (from California and other states) has a number to call on the back (or front) to verify the validity of a permit.

Someone who was serious about spoofing that could invest in a burner, use that number on the fake ID, and pay $100 to the single mom they know to "be the SO" when that phone rings ....

Speaking as a CCW civilian (retired fire captain) the GFSZA gives me a little heartburn. Travelling south on the freeway from my home puts me within 1000' of a school. To travel west I legally must travel on the freeway to avoid another school zone. My IA requires me to advise LEOs that I am carrying concealed.
So, is the GFSZA iron clad? Can an officer use discretion on a basic traffic stop? I pay attention to where I am going in regard to schools but there are times I just completely forget I'm carrying. FWIW I've had 1 ticket in 30 years and only been pulled over twice in addition to that.

                            Please. Stop.
I didn't bring up a "number on the card to call" - I'm just pointing out that such a number is worth less than the card it's printed on. This is one of the oldest scams in the book, the only correct way to verify something that's not known to be legit is to use some trusted third source (like a phone directory) to resolve the correct party to consult for verification.

Sheriff's office in county of issue, shouldn't be hard to look up. Using 411 for the win.

IIRC, CCW holders may pass through GFSZ 1,000-ft areas. It becomes an issue when you "set foot" on the properties.

Then again, remember the SRO that arrested the CHP retiree for carrying on school grounds when retirees are exempt?

With the increase of CCW permits being issued in California over the last five years, it seems prudent that issuing agencies should brief their officers/deputies of an increased likelihood they may encounter a permit holder. I also think it should apply to all LEO agencies across the state and be part of academy training.

During my 10 tenure it was never discussed. When I encountered someone armed in plain clothes my internal alarm went on high alert! Had I been aware/trained regarding permit holders I believe I would have been better prepared to deal with the situation at hand.
