    neighbor's dog

Having an issue with a neighbor's dog. It's an excessive barker and jumps on our retaining wall, barking at us whenever we try to enjoy our backyard. We are unable to enjoy our own private time without it barking at us over the wall. It is able to get it's front legs on top of the wall and appears to have intent to get over the wall and into my backyard.

I've already filed several complaints with the humane society.

Question: legally, 1) what can be done at this point, if anything? 2) if this dog jumps the wall, into my backyard, do I have a legal right to protect my family, property (including my own dog)?

Thank you for any and all input.

    Some suggestions here.
    Not all are applicable.

If the dog jumps the fence and is attacking a person, of course you can legally protect yourself. Not much you can do other than record the day, time and length of the dog barking and contact animal control.

I had a similar problem and mounted an ultrasonic bark control device. It kept the dog away from the fence. They have hand held ones too that you can use when you are in the back yard.

You could install some of those plastic spikes on top of the fence so it pokes the dog's paws and causes discomfort but doesn't cut the dog.

Best option is to try and make nice with the neighbors or dog. UPS drivers always feed the dogs treats so the dogs love seeing him.

Buy some cheap steaks or those pre-cooked chickens from the grocery store.

Make friends with the dog. Use a keyword when you feed him the steaks, like "friend." Have your wife and kids say the word too as you feed him the steaks.

Repeat a few times. Dog is now your best friend.

Chicken jerky teats at Sam's club, they cost $20 for a big bag. Trust me, that dog wont give a damn about their owner and will be your new best friend.

i've filed over 15 (confidential) complaints within the past 1.5 years w/the humane society. they continue to document the complaints and send their officers to discuss the issue with the dog owners. here we are, almost 2 years later with the same issue...

i'm so tempted to file the civil complaint to have a formal hearing called. i have supporting evidence that documents my complaints. but, i'm always concerned about the sensitive nature since this does concern a direct neighbor...

unfortunately, this neighbor is not on the best terms with anyone in our immediate community/block and keep to themselves. btw, i like your ideas

i am tempted to begin contacting the local PD. this way it will be on their call logs and documented with another agency.

Chickens don't have teats/tits, but ok.

Costco has 48-oz bags of beef patties, about 2"x1/4". Dog cocaine. It'll be your dog, not his.

one of my friends dogs use to bark constantly at me from behind the fence when i use to come over and work on cars with him. one day he was barking and barking and i came over and poured some water into his empty dish on a hot day and he never barked at me again. it clicked in his head that i was not a threat to him anymore. try treats.

If you already have animal control working on the problem, please don't bother calling the police. They will refer you to animal control and you will have taken up time they can be dealing with law enforcement issues. Eventually, you will become that PITA guy who keeps wasting their time and when you really need them, they are going to remember all those calls you made. They will be less interested in helping you on other matters.

I've always had good luck with the treat option. I used to carry them in my patrol car.
