Our neighbor complained to us about our dog barking at the stray cats he feeds.

Not LEO, but I believe you have recourse through small claims court. I read articles about how you can sue your neighbor because he's interfering with your right to enjoy your property in peace. If animal control can't fix him, and he obviously doesn't give a rip about your feelings; maybe a $7500 judgement would wake him up.

This...... Go to your local pet store and purchase one of those ultrasonic bark devices, spend a little more on a good one. Don't start it at the highest setting, and you will want to, but don't. Start off low and go up as needed. Take it back if it doesn't work. Here is an example of one, I've never used this one just an example:

Other options would be to contact your local law enforcement agency and file a complaint/citizen's arrest for disturbing the peace. No Officer likes to do it, but it can be done. Most agencies have a city/county ordinance for dealing with barking dogs, one agency I worked for had an ordinance which stated the dog had to bark continuously for 10 min in the officer's presence before you could cite the dogs owner.

Another option would be to take your neighbor to small claims court and sue them for disturbing your peace and quality of life. You better make sure you have plenty of proof such as audio or video.

Good luck to you, ive dealt with neighbor's that have had dogs that barked constantly and it sucks. I got to the point where I was yelling at the dog to shut up from bedroom window and knew the owners could hear me. I think it imbarrased them enough to get more involved with dealing with their dog.

Rat poison....just kidding. I think talking to your neighbors is a good idea.

I knew a case where this almost surely happened. Sucks but I can see where a dog constantly barking outside someone's window in a densely populated area can drive someone to it.

My other neighbor would never admit it but I'm almost certain he gave the dog a rat poison meat treat. I love these type threads they always bring put the internet tough guys and lunatics.

I've always had good luck with the treat option. I used to carry them in my patrol car.
                  good points and much appreciated.

i'm considering some type of barking control device, but, am concerned if it would also hurt my dog as well...

as mentioned, I am considering filing a formal civil complaint since i do have very strong supporting evidence.

This is a tough situation, which I have dealt with myself.

Politely approaching the neighbor resulted in an arrogant and very low class "deal with it" response.

Homeowners Association: Feckless and useless here. But be late on your HOA dues and all of the sudden they snap into action.

Anonymous complaint to Animal Control = A warning letter which was presumably ignored.

I will second what Ron said: Don't call the police. There is virtually nothing they can do with any legal ramifications. And now on top of your dog issue, it becomes the Hatfields and McCoys.

It goes without saying that you are not going to do anything to harm their dog. Now that becomes a crime. And who is to say they won't respond in kind to your pets?

Some people, regardless of socio-economic status, are just awful and inconsiderate.

Had another issue over the weekend with this neighbor. Calmly asked them to handle the issue and it turned into a very heated confrontation with him yelling obscenities in front of my wife and young son.

Think I will be installing surveillance cameras in case of any 'funny' business on their part.

Added, will go local SD to better understand my rights as a homeowner should that dog make it over the wall into my yard.

Yes, these things are real and yes, this website is no BS. Just be careful with their microwave particle accelerator, you could potentially cook yourself with your magneto.

Oh sorry, Their handheld Ultrasonic Acoustical Shockwave Pistol aka Phaser Pain Field Generator aka fancy noisemaker works well on cats, dogs and oppossums. Coons do not like it either but some are just plain stupid. I had a first gen and sold it off and then got a second gen and I am not as happy since you can not manually adjust the sweep or oscillation frequency but since it tends to do it on its own I guess I should not complain. Some animals need different frequencies to hit their drums which requires you to stand there and fire it with one hand while adjusting/tuning it with the other hand. Now you just press one-two buttons... Meh... I prefer 1st gen. I shot my g/fs cat and it darted under the bed every time after that when I showed up. They work...

Powdered glass is ridiculous, it doesn't hurt anything, even humans, so there's that.

Chocolate is a crapshoot, I had a black lab that ate an entire box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts... You could tell where he pooped by the undigested nuts, the chocolate had no effect on him.

Give the dog yummy treats every time you see him, pretty soon he'll be your best friend.

I did this and it works... make sure the owner is not around. Now when the dog knows I'm behind the fence, he just wags the tail :-).
