If your agency issues a sidearm for duty use, I highly doubt that purchasing firearms would count as a write-off, without other circumstances. Additional firearms are not required to do the job, and won't count towards write offs.

Guns tax write offs

Please don't speak on what you have no clue about. It makes you look dumb, which I doubt you really are.
While working, I deducted every firearm I purchased. One year, I was audited. The auditor didn't even bat an eye at the gun and ammo purchases I claimed.
Guns, ammo, equipment, uniform cleaning, etc are all allowable deductions.
Since I retired, no longer deductible.LASD Retired

Since all shooting increases ones necessary job skills I agree and have successfully made this argument many times for clients. Please don't speak on what you have no clue about. It makes you look dumb, which I doubt you really are.

Might be a stretch for a male LEO to argue the teal diamond studded Kahr wasn't personal unless maybe he worked vice. lol
Seriously the only things IRS has taken issue with (as long as we had documentation) is on duty meals, haircuts and gym memberships.
I guess I should mention that I represent people at audit for a living.Only slaves don't need guns

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

Going to bump this for the experts since the topic has peaked my curiosity...
Would these deductions apply to non-affiliated persons going through POST Basic?Comment

I've written off multiple guns in a year plus all the ammo. I also write off every range trip. The tax lady I see specializes in EMS, fire, and law enforcement. She's never given me any guff for writing off more than one gun.
Don't forget to write off you Oakley sunglasses, watches, and sunscreen too!Comment

My tax lady said they are necessary for the job and therefore eligible for a tax write off. We have to keep time and protect ourselves from sun exposure.Comment

I would argue that sunscreen and sunglasses are safety equipment and 100% deductible.
As for watches a little more gray area but in this day and age when most people use their smart phone to tell the time the argument that a watch is ordinary and necessary for your job (verses a personal item) becomes stronger. Also the cost of most watches is de-minimis(small) so I would encourage my clients to deduct it because the exposure if thrown out by the auditor is small.Only slaves don't need guns

The way my tax lady put it to me is basically, if you legitimately use it for work, write it off. I'm not willing to go to prison or be penalized by the IRS for a few dollars off my tax return of it was questionable. Sunscreen protects cops against skin cancer which is a real and growing epidemic in law enforcement. I'm sure you could make even a govt bean counter understand that.Comment
