Im guessing that since the first few years in anybodies career are spent in jails it would make more sense to get a taste of what jails are like. Is there any way to do that (besides the obvious lol)?

I know a few Riverside Sheriff deputies that have never done jails.
Out of the gate, they went to the courts (downtown Riverside) or to patrol (east side of county).
If you put in for the more populate patrol areas, you get sent to jail first. Put in for patrol in the middle of nowhere and you have a decent chance of going instead of jail.sigpic

Blythe or thermal station... you will probably do less than 12 months in jail..Comment

I have worked all three assignments jail, courts, and patrol. I can tell you patrol is the best representation of what a deputy sheriff job classification entails.
Jails and courts are temporary assignments which are great for learning certain things, but the true learning happens during the fto patrol program and your first few years on patrol.
Now if the op wants to be a correctional deputy, then doing some jail tours may be more appropriate rather than a ride a long.Comment

Thanks guys. I'll keep that in mind and be back to ask more questions if this application actually leads anywhere.Unless we keep the barbarian virtues, gaining the civilized ones will be of little avail. This is BS right here. They were fired or quit as RSO has not laid off a single deputy in the 10+ years I have been thereFriend of mine just got out of academy and at central jail right now, he said the jails suck but that's not surprising. Academy was tough for him he started it at 40 yrs old. I know 2 guys that were there and got laid off after 5 yrs service because they cut staffing, they were very upset to say the least, no warning or anything just called in and let go. They got picked up luckily by another agency.Comment

That may be true, I can only comment on what they told me, both of them work as officers for a local dept that is very selective right now which is how I know them. They're both on SWAT also so whatever the case it sounds like it was a better situation for them."People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."Comment

So I passed the PAT a few weeks ago and submitted my packet last week. Now I play the waiting game but that's ok. Because they wanna go west. Plenty of deps have gone out in 8-12 months if they chose Thermal or Blythe and some PD station. But of course not everyone can go out that fast. Someone has to do 10-10s ha ha haComment

I don't know what the tax laws are (I suspect you will still be taxed in CA on income), but we have CHP Officers and San Bernardino Deputies living in my town in AZ. The CHP officers are actually allowed to take their cars home. Wierd to see a CHP black and whites driving around in AZ.sigpicComment

I looked into it a while ago (in Virginia since half of northern VA works in DC) and you end up paying income tax in the state where you earn your money and you get a waiver for the state where you live. So I wouldn't save much in income tax but I imagine property taxes and Cost of living would be much nicerI don't know what the tax laws are (I suspect you will still be taxed in CA on income), but we have CHP Officers and San Bernardino Deputies living in my town in AZ.
