So, I moved to Perris about 2 years ago and met a guy at church whose pretty high on the totem pole with RSD. He took me to lunch for a little interview and there he strongly suggested that I apply to be a Deputy. I ended up not doing it because I had applied to a bunch of agencies in Texas before I left the army and none of them turned into anything and it just killed my dream. My marriage also started to fall apart around the time I moved here (were now divorced).

I now find myself considering different career paths and am looking at law enforcement again. Is right now a good time to apply with RSD? I'm taking the first test this Friday at Ben Clark

i'm currently in the hiring process, i started in Sept and my file is now closed but i have to get a few documents changed to match each other before i can attend the academy, so i have a little while longer to go. RSD is always wanting applicants but have a very low hire rate.

I actually applied with RSD back in 2010 too lol. I remember there were like 60 people at the computer testing (with walk-ins showing up) and like 400 people at the PAT lol. My test today only had 15 people. I got a minute with one of the recruiters and I asked him how I could better my chances of being hired in the future and he said 3 things: go military, get the highest security clearance you can get and stay out of trouble.

But ya the job in VA didnt work out. Contracting BS

Friend of mine just got out of academy and at central jail right now, he said the jails suck but that's not surprising. Academy was tough for him he started it at 40 yrs old. I know 2 guys that were there and got laid off after 5 yrs service because they cut staffing, they were very upset to say the least, no warning or anything just called in and let go. They got picked up luckily by another agency.

RSO has never had layoffs... Sounds like something else... Just my 0.02. "Pink slips" went out in 2011 but no one has ever been laid off.

Now is a good time to try and get hired. Most agencies were limited in hiring by the recession. Now with normal attrition, the 70/80s officers retiring there is a big demand.

RSO has never had layoffs... Sounds like something else... Just my 0.02. "Pink slips" went out in 2011 but no one has ever been laid off.

Never happened, political stunt during union contract negotiations... Been living the RSO dream since 2007.... So OP go for it they need 400-500 Deps / C. Deps for East county expansion. On a side note negotiations are starting up again, so hiring may be a little slow. But by the time you even get close to being hired negotiations should be over. Contract is up in July...

Probably better off asking those questions to huma. Resource workers. When I got hired 5 years ago from them... I didnt even care about those stuff because I was so happy and desperate for the job

Well if retirement formula changes it will effect new hires, I don't see it get it worse that 2.7 @ 57 as it stands now for new hires. Also little things may change as how much employees need to pay into their retirements. But like the last gunner said I didn't worry about all that I just needed a good job, and they gave me all that and more. And as far as living in AZ not paying CA taxes idk how all that would work? Plus Blythe jail or patrol don't seem too appealing ha ha. Indio is where the new jail expansion is going on.

You can live in az but you will still he subject to ca income taxes since you work in ca.

Now that 3 @ 50 retirement is gone, I'd look at being a cop in a different state than ca if I was just starting out.

Rso is a decent department, not great, not bad, just average compared to others. I know you met someone high ranking, aka admin, who told you to apply.

If you want to get a real feel of what the job is like, go on a ride along at one of the patrol stations. Ask for swing shift on a fri or sat night so you get some good exposure.
