Kidding aside the AR15 is true and tested in MHO. I fired them a bunch in various conditions from iced up and frozen rain, to 120+ temp in the Libyan desert covered in sand.

The AR-15 is America's rifle. It is the most common rifle in the populace and in law enforcement.

Many local municipal PDs are relegating the 870 to less lethal (bean bag) status, and the AR rides in the front of the unit.

There are wood furniture kits out there for the AR if that would soften the look

I know a rich kid who's mommie wouldn't get him get an AR (because of 'Nam etc) but he talked her into buying him an AUG because its "European style".

IIRC he somehow conflated "European style" with harmless Olympic ski and shoot sports.

Consider me part of the general public. I like to see LEO's with AR15's in the center console. If not hopefully they have one in the trunk. The regular beat patrol having AR15's is comforting to me. All LEO's should have AR15's in the car. You never know what they might be up against. Always be prepared.

Unfortunately law enforcement now-a-days is being swayed and influenced by public opinion, not by what is necessary to complete the job. I've heard horror stories about the mini-14 action, reliability etc. That being said asking for an AK probably won't go over to well. Unfortunately Lib-tard peeps such as your administration are asking you to do your job without adequate gear. I'd take this as the writing on the wall and look at other departments. This ideology will bleed over into the rest of the day to day workings of your job. Best of luck
