I have a healthy respect for all forms of self defense and fighting styles. With that said, the person who takes the first good shot to the face usually loses. Thus, I agree with you about avoiding a street fight.

As stated OC and Tasers are your most popular "less lethal" options.

Also as it's been stated already, there are a lot of variables that go into the effectiveness of both.

OC generally works best against fair skinned individuals and anyone with sensitive skin. That being said, there are some people who are simply unaffected by it. When we do our trainings there are usually 1 officer in every 15+ person class that is immune or resistant to the effects (not me, it took 30 minutes of flushing my eyes out with a hose to even see)

Real "tasers" are usually cost prohibitive to a lot of people and they end up opting for the "stun gun" type electronic weapons. These have a deterrent quality in the sound they make when they discharge that might make an assailant run away or at least think twice about coming after you. However, once you're in a fight and you get hit with one. It just hurts. There's no muscle lock-up or instant incapacitation like you see in the movies. A person can and will continue to fight you if the first few zaps don't scare them off.

With that said, something is better than nothing. Carry something that you have the ability to use confidently and with intent and precision. If you aren't comfortable carry something, don't.
