    Hello this question is for LEO's;

Im looking for a *non-lethal* form of *self defense* to protect myself.

    Thanks in advance.

There are just 2 available in California:

Pepper spray (legally tear gas) in appropriately labeled and sized dispensers. PC 22810

    Stun guns. PC 22610

And note those are NOT 'nonlethal', they are 'less than lethal'.

Recommendations for brands are left to others.

Are you looking for weapons or actual self defense (i.e. martial arts)?

If it's martial arts, I could recommend a bunch, but its lethality is all dependant on the person.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo are fantastic to fight against a suspect taking you to the ground and for you to simply be comfortable on the ground when it happens. Utilizing joint locks, hip tosses/throws, and other types of submissions.

Muay Thai/kickboxing is great for close quarters and utilizes your elbows and knees very effectively.

Kali and the Koga Method (Koga is taught to many LE agencies) are good reactionary, defensive types of martial arts, but have some very powerful and devastating techniques.

Taekwondo is a very good striking art form. Many of the kicks used and taught are very powerful.

Wing Chun despite it's popularity by the more recent movies of Ip Man and especially Bruce Lee is a powerful martial art that I can best describe as very straight line and powerful. I know a lot of LEOs that take this as well.

Take as many as you can and become proficient in as many as you can. It's great training and builds confidence. I'll be starting Muay Thai again soon along with taking formal BJJ classes as well. One of my coworkers teaches Kali on the side, privately, and I may take him up on his offer and train with him.

Pepper sprays and Tasers are no guarantee for self protection. If you come across someone intoxicated these tools might not work.

Learn some self defense found in martial arts especially a system that teaches submissions and control holds especially the choke or what is commonly known in the law enforcement community as the carotid restraint. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is probably the best system for this type of self defense due to the techniques taught and the way the training is implemented through live training (Sparring).

Never had someone resist the choke no matter how intoxicated they are.

Are you worried about hurting someone else?

I hate OC. I don't carry it on my belt.

Years ago there was 'Festival By The Lake' in Oakland, at Lake Merritt. I watched news footage of police dispersing rowdy groups, where the festival-goers were being sprayed with streams of OC. They just kept walking...

It can be a problem in any enclosed space, or if one sprays into the wind, or if the target is in grappling range and can get to you.

And self-defense use requires a commitment to 'shoot and scoot' - don't hang about watching for results.

All that said, OC is better than harsh words or a disapproving stare.

For non-exempt persons, unit size limit is 2.5oz. [PC 22810(e)(1)]

It's a misdemeanor (up to 1 year in jail + $2000 fine) for a non-exempt person to possess a unit that contains more than 2.5oz. [PC 22900]

However, it is legal to own/possess/carry multiple 2.5oz units.

The effectiveness is hit or miss and more often than not, you'll get some of it while you are trying to deploy it.
