I'm not an LEO: but a stun flash lite is legal & seems to be effective. (check into the law on that) BTW if you ask LEO's for information then don't discount their advise as common or simple don't ask!

I worked the field for 25 years and never saw pepper spray have 'no effect'. I saw it turn more than a few big unruly guys into whimpering arrestees.
BJJ is not an option outside an octagon. Take a guy to the ground and his friends rush in and put the boots to you.
Kick boxing and boxing will do you well if you practice, like any MA. Nothing deflates a bunch of a-holes more than dropping their front man with a good punch to the face or kick to the nuts.

how about some info here? Did it not work because you missed the face and were in a Rain storm? Do tell my man!

Learn some self defense found in martial arts especially a system that teaches submissions and control holds especially the choke or what is commonly known in the law enforcement community as the carotid restraint. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is probably the best system for this type of self defense due to the techniques taught and the way the training is implemented through live training (Sparring).

Never had someone resist the choke no matter how intoxicated they are.
Martial arts are fine for self defense; provided you can guarantee that your adversary is not bigger, stronger, or much younger than you. There is a reason all professional fighting has weight classes & participants can only be paired with opponents in the same weight class.

Correct ! And I am guessing the OP wants some thing right away that he can obtain to defend himself. Martial Arts/Boxing lessons or whatever fighting style you choose is fine, but it takes years to become a skilled fighter.

Martial arts should not be considered "Nonlethal self defense". If I'm forced to use my hand fighting skills... then all bets are off. I will use any and all strikes or kicks that I see an opening for. Some will be reactive with no forethought... and lethal.

The only way I would stop is when I no longer perceive a life or grave bodily harm threat. The same as the defensive use of a gun.

The last I read in California, most people may purchase, posses, or use a stun gun, and they do not have to obtain a permit.

I was a licensed boxer at 16 and have trained in many types of fighting. I've also taken brass knuckles to the face. Im not getting into a fist fight on the street.
