I was not aware there was a technique to break cuffs.

Is this real or prop cuffs?

Looks real but you never know. Leverage can do a lot.

You have to be incredibly strong and have a high tolerance for pain to break standard police cuffs. tbh so I don't it.

That is why you don't cuff in front. I'd be really impressed if he did it behind his back.

I was a Deputy Sheriff back in the early '80s, and PCP was the street drug of choice. I had a rather large individual who was arrested under the influence arrive at the booking station of the jail while I was on duty. I entered his stats in the system, then told him I needed to take his cuffs off. He was completely compliant, and snapped the chain on the Peerless cuffs that were behind his back like they were made of spaghetti. I thanked him, removed the bracelets from his wrist, and gently walked him to the isolation cell. Thankfully, he didn't nut up - I doubt six of us could have controlled him. My Sergeant said I didn't show any reaction at all when the guy snapped the chain - and that was perfect, as the prisoner didn't "get excited", and nobody got hurt.

The handcuffs in the video are not real. I've seen them around.

I've seen that done with smith & wesson and peerless cuffs. The trick is to bind the connecting chain linkage and torque them. Those were ASP cuffs in the video, they look like the old design.

It isn't a new trick, I've seen it before.

The trick is to take all the play out of them and then apply the correct leverage...there is no "pain" factor involved, just leverage

It is much harder behind the back, because you can't see when you have them set and angled correctly.

We had a female frequent flyer that could break cuffs. She was a construction worker with a freaky high tolerance for pain. she'd interlock the double strands and twist until the rivets popped. Same woman once tore the stainless toilet/sink combo out of the wall in the isolation cell. Her Kryptonite was Mace, she hated that stuff. One time she was nutting up and 3 of us unloaded cans on her. Heh, she never forgot that one. Any of the old timers around here have stories about Christine Costa.

They are real, and it's not very difficult to do with chain cuffs of most any brand.

Exactly. Civilians will never believe what we have seen.

I've seen it done that way, and there's at least one other way I've seen it done by springing the hinge of the cuff ratchet. We had one frequent flyer who could manage the last one handcuffed behind.
