Good idea, it can get confusing for many of the California members there. It’s like seeing a mother and child drown while we are trying to save our own families on a sinking ship.

So, the way I see this is for us in free state. Unless this ATF rulemaking is halted by some entity, whether it be the Congress or a judge, we will be forced to register our braced pistols. Only braced pistols are eligible and they’ll ask us to prove it by sending them pictures. This will be uploaded during the eForm 1 process. There seems to be language stating that the registration will be free, unlike the current system.

My opinion on it is this:

The Good: free SBR registration. The Man does not get your money. If The Bad and The Ugly below doesn’t faze you, this is the time to put a brace on that Draco, put that Glock into a chassis.

The Bad: it will be a pain to sell your braced pistols. You will have to remove the stock or put a longer barrel and write the ATF a request to de-register your gun before selling it.

Traveling between states will be restricted. You will have to fill out a Form 5320.20 to get a permission if your destination state allows SBRs. It’s no longer easy to slap a brace on (if your gun started life as a pistol) and travel. You can still put a 16+ inch barrel to cross state lines without a 5320.20 permission.

Some states does not allow you to carry a loaded long gun in the car, nor CCW a rifle. Some do, lucky you.

I think there is a good chance that you’ll be required to engrave your new SBR. Some argue that it is not the owner who made it to an SBR, but the ATF, and others say that when they bought a braced pistol, it is the manufacturer that put the brace on and the manufacturer’s name is already engraved.

The Ugly: Now you are on the database. Maybe not such a big deal if you’ve already owned NFA items, But if you haven’t, they know who and where you are.

If this new reg happens, I'll probably only register one or two. There's still a chance that sanity returns to our govt in the next few years. Once registered, you really can't unring that bell, so I want to leave a couple-three unregged, hoping that someone straightens out the AFT.

I would think, if brought to SCOTUS, the court would kick it to Congress given a similar decision regarding EPA regulatory power over the 1970 Clean Air Act.
I would think this is similar as it would apply to NFA of 1934 covering SBRs.

My question is, once it is classified as a SBR will a foreword grip still be a felony? I would think not.

PSA has a good deal on a Stribog SP9A1 I'm contemplating buying but being a recent expat and still getting used to just buying a gun and walking out same time is mind blowing already. I'm worried I might be getting in over my head having to deal with registering it as an SBR when the time comes. Figures this would happen as soon as I gain the freedom to buy whatever I want! ^^^ No, this is the right time to buy one, especially one with a brace.

Hopefully, one day, someone will post a tutorial on eForm 1 on Calguns.

So long as no one has issue with it in the future for being a dupe or whatever, i’m gonna keep all my brace questions and future legal findings over here. I have a few and am gonna have to decide what to do, most difficult will be my HK’s.
Good news is that Idaho LE doesn't assist the ATF with weapons issues.
