When it came to SBRing guns, as soon as I figured out the system, I went into an SBR binge (like when I just got out of California and started binging on off roster handguns.) Now I’m starting to come around and realize the downside as well.

Of course, the upcoming new ruling on braces might change all that.

I am going to fill out the E-Form 1 tomorrow for my first SBR. When I get my stamp, I will have my FFL/SOT guy engrave my receiver. Lucky for me he is just down the street a few miles away.

You better hurry. The system is going down on Friday 12/17 at 6 pm PST for an upgrade for eForm 4.

Hang in there. Best to forget it until you get the e-mail.

Another way to is check "My Forms" on eforms.atf.gov under "approved" -> "Form 1" to see if it is already there. I thought I was in the perma-wait black hole too on my MP5 that I submitted in February. Recently I checked the website and saw that was under "approved". And I never got the e-mail saying they approved it.

So, forgive my ignorance, but what is this process like? Say I have an 80% I want to build into a SBR...how does one go about that? Asking for a friend.
Welcome to OT, where hypocrisy is King, outrage is Queen and the Kingdom is on the shores of the Denial River.

                        1. Request free fingerprint cards from the ATF (you should do this BEFORE submitting your eForm 1, as you only have a limited window to send in your fingerprints once you’ve filed the form)

                        2. Log onto the ATF eForms website and fill out a Form 1. Since it’s an 80% build, congratulations; you get to name it whatever the **** you want. You can call it the BRANDON-15 with a serial number of 69 for all the ATF cares.

2a. Pay your $200 tax by credit card at the end of the eForm submission process.
2b. Print out the cover sheet ATF will email you, fingerprint yourself on the aforementioned fingerprint cards, and mail them into the ATF. You’ll also need to mail a copy of the form to your CLEO. The CLEO doesn’t have any say, mind you—you just have to mail a copy to them.

                        3. Engrave your 80% lower with your name (or the name of your trust, if you chose to use a trust), the model name you chose, the serial number, and—this is important—The city and state where the SBR will be ASSEMBLED. Lots of guys think this is supposed to be your city of residence, and 99.999% of the time your city of residence is where you will also first assemble the SBR, but realize that the ATF doesn’t give a **** about where you live. The engraving is where it was assembled.

3a. Some guys have done really cool engravings by finding the most badass city name in their area and then driving all the way over there to snap the upper onto the lower. Like Atomic City, ID or Tomahawk, WI.

                        4. Wait til the ATF Emails you your approval—then, put your upper and lower together IN THE CITY YOU ENGRAVED ON THE LOWER, and you’re done.

That’s a common one. I do my SBR engravings inside the trigger guard area, by a company called Tarheel State Firearms. They have an example photo on their website here: https://tarheelstatefirearms.com/sto...product_id=232 it’s fully compliant with ATF regs, and you’d have to look REALLY hard to find it if you didn’t know it was there.

Tarheel engraved my trust info under the pic rail on a KH9SD for me. I had to ask if they forgot to engrave it lol

On an AR, I like it under the receiver next to the oval trigger hole. Inside the magwell is cool, but if the gun is a working gun, all that magazine insertion may scratch the engraving.

                            Good summary, tuna.

I stop counting the days. It was 57 days and waiting as of 12/2/2021 and I'm still waiting.

All this supposed upgrades and it's still slow as heck and the website has just as many issues as before. Man can .gov get 'er done.
