Army dumping M9?????

Yeah I read this in Army times at work today. Really hope they go with something good. Can't go wrong with a Glock, ultra reliable and so easy anyone can learn on it quick.

I'll say it for you. Absolutely HATE the M9. Was issued it and owned one (ok, a I owned a 96FS which is the same just a different caliber) as my first civilian owned handgun. Later discovered Glocks and have been a Glock guy ever since.

As for the story, I've seen one of these stories every six months ever since my own days in the service. The military is constantly evaluating new weapons. Everytime they do their own press releases a story implying the exisisting system will be relpaced. Some get adopted on a small scale, but usually what ends up happening is the existing system just gets some small upgrade - if that. Take any story released by the military with a MAJOR grain of salt, especially when it comes to their own weapon systems. Most of the time they are just blowing smoke. So we will just have to wait and see.

I like the second story about SSGT Angie Johnson better. She is a heck of a singer. Go Air Force!

I just don't see them going away from 9mm due to doublestack and NATO partners... And I'm not saying M9 is not due for a refresh, it's heavy and bulky IMO.... Beretta just got a very large order a year ago. Doubt it'll be replaced in the short term...

Here's an idea, go start pulling these out of DRMO. And quit giving them away to Police agencies on a ' loan'. Oh wait, those contractors are going to want to make some $$ and tell you about the new pistol on the block.

Agreed. Wasn't the Army supposedly going to a H&K .45 ACP like back in 2005?

That was for liability purposes when they were intentional skimping on training and wanted to be able to do so while cutting down on the number of NDs. Some of us old timers were around when the change occured. They wanted more than just a manual safety at the time. They wanted an automatic decocker. Put it on safe, and it decocks and goes back the the DA pull thus making the chance of an ND even if the safety accidentally gets flipped off unlikely. Police agencies also liked that their officers always started off on the DA pull so that if it turned out to be a kid with a squirt gun, the officer could have time to change his mind before finishing the pull. Both were looking for mechanical solutions to solve budget problems that impacted training.

The problem is, in real life you don't have all day to pull the trigger. You need to be faster than the other guy or you die.

The good news is, the military has a totally different mindset than it did when they adopted the M9. Now they favor combat effectiveness over trying to cut their training budget. In fact, they are constantly looking at better ways to train troops these days. Amazing what two wars and third covert pseudo-war will do for the mindsets of those in charge.

That said, we'll see if anything comes of this. Switching weapon systems is more than just picking a better gun. It takes a massive chunk out of the budget which is already tapped. Since the pistol is a secondary weapon anyway the money might better be spent on training. Training is by far the best weapon we can provide our troops. I would love to see the M9 go, but more importantly I would live all of our troops to be trained before they deploy instead of after (like in my day) or in a lot of cases not all.

As for your absolutely insane suggestion. That is just plain sacrilege. A manual thumb safety completely defeats the purpose of a Glock. Might as well keep the Beretta M9 if you do that. Shame on you for making that suggestion. Give yourself a Gibbs love tap on the back of the head for me. (NCIS reference in case you don't watch the show. But if you do read the last paragraph with an Abby voice as intended).

I vote HK 45. My M9 is godawful and I do whatever I can to leave it in the armory.

heard about this today. go back to the .45 and be done with it. it served our country well for 70+ years let it serve us again.
